Calaveras Land /Water Committee Discusses Plan for New CCWD Site ~ By Bethany Monk
San Andreas, C.A….Ed Rich, Calaveras Counter Water District 4 Director told the district’s Land/ Water committee that he wants to see a new CCWD site built during his lifetime….
Dave Andres, CCWD general manager
“We should have been out of this building 15 years ago,” he told the committee and nearly 20 members of the public, including CCWD board directors and employees during the committee’s 10 a.m. meeting Thursday, Jan. 31 in the district's board room in San Andreas. “I want to see a new site before I’m dead.”
Rich, the committee’s chair, voiced his concerns over the draft of the employee survey and special study prepared by consultants, noting that the results from the final survey will determine “…where we park these people … they’re going to be there for 40 years,” he said. “This is going to be monumental decision for the agency.”
He wants consultants to devise a survey that addresses several issues including location attributes of various geographical sites, services to the site, and whether the new site should be built on land where water and sewer is provided by CCWD or by another district. When completed, the survey will be available for CCWD employees to fill out; its results will help the district determine where to build the new site. Committee members are also discussing a similar survey for CCWD customers.
In other news, the committee discussed its plan to implement a dual water system in the county to provide non-potable water – in addition to the already-available potable water – for residents’ use.
“Why do you have drinking water in fire hydrants?” Rich asked, rhetorically, in a brief interview during a meeting break. Rich wants to put in a dual system, a pipe for non-potable water in the county to help save money “…and give somebody an upgrade,” he said, referring to the many people who use water for irrigation and other outside activities.
The committee is also devising a non-potable water survey for the public.
These issues will be carried over for further discussion at the committee’s next meeting on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. in the CCWD board room at 423 E. St. Charles St. in San Andreas.
