'Tranquility' Offered in the Heart of Downtown Murphys ~ By Bethany Monk
Murphys, C.A….The creek, the candles and the quiet. Take these words, toss them around in your mind and apply them to this hidden treasure nestled in historic downtown Murphys…
Tranquility Massage & Skin Care – owned and managed by Murphys resident Janice Ryavec-Goranson, a certified massage therapist and esthetician – offers an array of therapeutic massages, facials and body wraps in a cozy, downtown atmosphere tucked away from the businesses of everyday life.
A couple of years ago, after visualizing about “a peaceful, nurturing” place near water, Janice found a house on Main Street in Murphys for rent. She and the homeowner shared a similar vision for the house (as a place to help others); in the winter of 2006, Janice was able to open Tranquility Massage & Skin Care, her literal “dream salon” to the public.
She has since converted the entire home into a salon. The house, about 2,300 square-feet total, has three bedrooms that have been converted into spacious massage therapy rooms. When the windows are cracked even just slightly in the rooms, one can hear the soothing movement of the nearby creek. Several trees line the creek and speckle the backyard in various shades of green.
For some people getting a massage is “a part of their life,” she said. Others will come in when they’re burned out and need to rejuvenate themselves. “Some people want to be real silent on the table,” and some like to “let go” and talk.
Benefits of massage therapy, according to Janice’s pamphlet offered at Tranquility include:
*Deep relaxation
*Reduction of physical and mental stress
*Help with relieving headaches
*Increase in blood circulation
*Help with metabolic waste elimination
*Muscle tension and stiffness relief
*Better flexibility and range motion
*A sense of peace and feeling of being centered.
*Emotional well-being
She offers Swedish/ Esalen (a full-body massage with lotion or oil); Shiatsu (acupressure: pressure point work and stretching techniques); and Reflexology (working nerve points in the feet).
“I integrate a variety of techniques and tailor each massage to the individual needs of my clients,” she states in her pamphlet.
Janice is a childbirth educator and labor coach and offers Massage for Pregnant Women to “help relieve stress and pressure, allowing you to feel more comfortable during this time.”
Before making the move to Murphys seven years ago, she spent 15 years as a massage therapist in a chiropractic practice in Pacifica (near San Francisco). “I worked with really good people interested in the whole person,” she said.
Janice and her husband moved to the foothills seven years ago when both of their daughters were still in school. “That was one of the things we really liked,” she said of the school system in Calaveras County. Their oldest daughter, now 18, graduated from Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp and is now a Columbia College student in Sonora. Their other daughter, who is 16, currently attends Bret Harte.
In the near future, Janice would like to expand the facility and offer a variety of classes to the community. “I’m looking for a yoga teacher for one or two classes per week.” She currently teaches a belly dancing classes at the site. The next class, a beginners class, will start sometime in early spring and will he held on Tuesday evenings
For those who want the whole deal, Ryavec-Goranson has an on-call person who will come to the salon to cut hair and give manicures and pedicures.
Tranquility Massage & Skin Care, 331 Main Street in Murphys, is open by appointment (same day appointments available). Call (209) 743-5998.
Janice has a bachelor’s of science degree in health education from Sonoma State University, and has worked as a certified massage therapist for 27 years.
