Flamenco Dance Featured in Angels Camp February 17(SOLD OUT)

Angels Camp, CA...One of the West Coast’s most exciting and dynamic flamenco dance companies will present their staccato footwork and colorful costumes on Sunday afternoon, February 17 in Angels Camp. Don’t miss the electrifying dancers of San Francisco’s “Theatre Flamenco”, accompanied by a brilliant line-up of musicians and singers when the curtain rises at 3:00 pm in the Bret Harte Theatre, 323 Highway 49. The performance is part of the Calaveras Arts Council’s “Ovations” Performing Arts Series which has already thrilled local audiences with two prior concerts in January....

Tickets are for reserved seating and cost $25 per adult; $10 for youth under 18. Order on-line through www.highsierratickets.com or by calling (209)295-6440. If not sold out, tickets will be available at the box office of The Bret starting at 2:30 pm the day of the performance.

Founded in 1966 by Adela Clara, Theatre Flamenco was the first American resident dance company to stage full production of Spanish dance in the United States. The only dance company in San Francisco that is older than Theatre Flamenco is the San Francisco Ballet. Forty-two years is a long time for a nonballet company to exist, but the combination of an on-going legacy of dedicated dancers who love and respect Spanish dance, plus the direction and choreography of Miquel Santos, has sustained Theatre Flameno.

Featured among the five dancers will be Carola Zertuche, who began her dance career in Mexico City's Tablao Meson de Triana. Her studies have led her to many renowned. She has been featured as a soloist in Pilar Rioja's company "Reflejo Español" and danced with the Maria Elena Anaya Company under the artistic direction of Manolo Vargas and with other companies. Her dance has been showcased in such festivals as the Ethnic Dance Festival in San Francisco, the Santa Barbara Flamenco Festival and the Monterrey Mexico Flamenco Festival.

Besides performing, the company artists conduct regular classes in Spanish dance arts for students of all ages and skill levels, training countless dancers and ensuring the future of Spanish dance traditions. While in Calaveras, the company will be visiting local schools.
