Magnitude 8.1 Earthquake Strikes 87 Kilometers Southwest of Pijijiapan, Mexico

Pijijiapan, Mexico...The Quake was felt as far away a Mexico City but no major damage has been reported there. The quake struck offshore in an area that has smaller towns and villages. From the USGS..."Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake resistant construction. The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block with concrete bond beam and mud wall construction.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as tsunamis and landslides that might have contributed to losses."
