Lights…Camera….What do I do? Free Video Production Class Starts Next Week!~ By Bethany Monk

San Andreas, C.A… For Ed Lark, manager of the Public Access Television Studio of Calaveras County, video production is nothing new, and this veteran of the field is gearing up to teach another free 11-week television production class open to county residents…

Ed Lark

“We put the class on twice a year,” Lark said, noting this upcoming session and a spring session as well. The next class will begin Tuesday, Feb 5 and will meet every Tuesday until the last class on April 15. Each class will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Public Access TV Studio at 429 E. St. Charles St. in San Andreas. “It covers all the basic fundamentals of television production.”

Students who take the class pledge to produce at least one half-hour program for Public Access Television. Some students decide to volunteer regularly after the course completion. “The idea is when people take the class, they get involved,” Lark said. “We have a great selection of video equipment they can check out and use.”

The class is free and open to participants of all ages; however, children taking the class must be accompanied by adults.

The 11-week class schedule includes:

Feb. 5: Proper use of video production equipment. This class is necessary to check out equipment.

Feb. 12: Do’s and Don’t of shooting a sequence.

Feb. 19: How to get the most out of sound; how to solve sound problems.

Feb. 26: More sound/ Lighting

March 4: Creating a working script and shooting it.

March 11: Multi-camera shoot

March 18: Use of a non-linear, digital editing bay using iMovie

March 25: Further use of iMovie.

April 1: Introduction to Final Cut Express.

April 8: Further use of Final Cut Express.

April 15: Legal aspects of video production (copyrights, model releases, etc.)
This experienced filmmaker says he teaches the basics of video production during the 11-week course and also likes to “pass along the little tricks the professionals use.”

One could say Lark is a veteran of the film industry. For 40 years, he worked as an independent filmmaker producing documentaries from places around the globe. “I’ve traveled all over the world—Europe, the Middle East,” Lark said. Some places were filled with “red tape” and others welcomed the filmmaker “with open arms.”

“This is somewhat of a new experience,” he said of his job at Public Access. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it…The board has been very supportive,” Lark said, adding that the image of the television station has improved immensely.

Call Lark at (209) 754-4021 for more information or to register for the class.

Public Access Television in Calaveras County is funded by the county’s Board of Supervisors. For a complete listing of Public Access shows (Channels 7 and/or 9), visit http://www.co.calaveras.ca.us/departments/patv/patv_1a.html.
