“Great Decisions 2008” Offers a Provocative Series of Guided Discussions on International Issues Six Sunday Afternoons on February 10 through March 16th~By Kathryn Eustis

Murphys, CA...“You must be the change you want to see in the world” -- Mahatma Gandhi. “Great Decisions 2008,” a provocative series of guided discussions on international issues, invites Calaveras community members to participate in any or all of six free seminars on current global issues. Columbia College professors and subject matter experts will engage participants in lively...

thoughtful discussion and answer questions. The meetings begin Sunday, February 10, 2:00 to 3:30pm, in the social hall of the First Congregational Church, Algiers and Church Streets, Murphys. Following meetings will be held on succeeding Sundays through March 16 at the same time and place. For further information the public may call Margot Cross at (209)795-3798.

The non-partisan secular Foreign Policy Association provides the nationwide “Great Decisions” program, which is designed to educate the public and provoke discussion about international affairs. Locally, “Great Decisions” is a series of six meetings focusing on significant domestic and international issues. These are not lectures, but open discussions of the topic of the day. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Calaveras Chapter presents the “Great Decisions” program in our community.

February 10: Professor Ted Hamilton opens the program with a discussion entitled Iraq - End Game: Strategies for Dealing with Uncertainty. Professor Hamilton teaches Political Science and American Political Thought at Columbia College. He is an expert on the Middle East, having served as the historian in the Court of the Shah of Iran, and he was voted State of California Professor of the Year.

February 17: Vic and Barby Ulmer discuss Latin America: The Next U.S. President's Agenda. The Ulmers, retired educators, currently sponsor and lead trips to third world nations. They are experts on the politics and economics of Latin America.

February 24: Laura Leslie provides expertise on U.S. Diplomacy: Blacklisting the Enemy. Ms. Leslie teaches international relations at Columbia College.

March 2: Professor Peter Lee addresses The Israel-Palestine Dispute and U.S. Foreign Policy. Professor Lee teaches Philosophy, World Religions and Spirituality at Columbia College. He is an expert on the historical roots of the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

March 9: Ann Pestalozzi, MSW, leads a discussion of Philanthropy and Foreign Aid: New Players, New Goals? The concept of foreign aid is undergoing a transformation, with new forms of assistance, new donors, and new ways of measuring success. Will this new approach produce better results?

March 16: Great Decisions participants will hold an Open Forum to talk about U.S. - China Trade and U.S. Security and Defense. This will be a group discussion of U.S.-China economic relations and evolving rivalry and how the U.S. should structure its military to meet the new challenges to U.S. and world security.

Program reading material is available in advance from the Foreign Policy Association (800) 477-5836 or www.fpa.org. Local libraries also have additional suggested reading materials. The readings are informative but not essential to participate in the meetings. Direct e-mail questions about the “Great Decisions” program to diskc@aol.com.
