Supes Reject Eminent Domain Seizure for New Jail Site (board mtg. re-cap also included) ~ By Bethany Monk
San Andreas, C.A....There’s “grave uncertainty” that the county would be able to purchase land for the new jail via eminent domain proceedings prior to the state’s March deadline, said Brent Harrington, Calaveras County interim Administrative Officer....
Harrington encouraged the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, during its weekly meeting Jan. 22, to explore other options in obtaining a site for the new jail.
Supervisors were considering an eminent domain seizure of the properties – owned by Greg Opinsky, OP Development and Ryan Voorhees, CRV Enterprises – after the owners had turn down initial offers. After much discussion, the board decided to consider, instead, negotiating the purchase of the two properties north of the Government Center in San Andreas for the construction of the new jail and courthouse.
Supervisors will also consider property new the Government Center that is already owned by the county.
“It would be nice if we could use the property to the north,” said District 1 Supervisor Bill Claudino. “But we should not ignore the property we already have.
In other board news, the board voted 5-0 authorizing Public Works interim director to execute a Professional Service Agreement with Stantect Consulting, Inc., to devolope a Bridge Preventative Maintenance Plan.
Agenda item 13, an ordinance repealing and re-enacting a county code to establish standards for dedications of land and/or payment of fees for for Park and Recreation Facilities was moved to the Feb. 5 board meeting via a 5-0 vote from the board.
Also moved to the Feb. 5 meeting was agenda item 14, which requests the approval of: 1) a Professional Services Contract with Quad Knopf, Inc. for completion of the Environmental Impact Report for The Ridge at Trinitas: 2) the contract of Mike and Michelle Nemee to reimburse the county for the costs of the Quad Knopf contract; and 3) a budget transfer of $245,673.
The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 9 a.m. in the Government Center in San Andreas. For more information call (209) 754-6370.
