Caltrans Upgrading Guardrails SR-49 & SR-108 In Tuolumne County

Tuolumne County – Caltrans is preparing for a project that will upgrade guardrails and make other improvements on 16 miles of State Route 49/(SR-49) and SR-108, including increasing the truck-turning radius at SR-108 and South Washington Street. The project is scheduled to begin Monday, March 20, 2017, and be completed in June 2017. Crews are primarily scheduled to work Sunday night through Thursday night, from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. One way-traffic control will be used and drivers should expect 10 minute delays.

The project will be performed by Dirt & Aggregate Interchange Inc. of Fairview, Oregon, which had the qualifying bid of $1.06 million.

Work on northbound and southbound SR-49 will be performed on a five-mile stretch from near Harvard Mine Road to Columbia Way. Guardrail at various locations on eastbound and westbound SR-108 will be upgraded on an 11-mile stretch, from the SR-108/SR-49 junction to Heliport Road.

A section of guardrail at the northeast corner of the SR-108/South Washington Street intersection has been frequently damaged by westbound big rigs turning north onto South Washington. The guardrail at that corner will be relocated, allowing a wider truck turning radius and conforming with the Surface Transportation Assistance Act.

Work is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/or materials and construction-related issues.
