Stanislaus National Forest Warns Snow Conditions Are Challenging For Winter Recreation On Summit Ranger District
Sonora, CA...Heavy rains and warm temperatures have taken a toll on Forest winter recreation trails on the Summit Ranger District, Forest officials warned. Winter trails on Calaveras Ranger District are faring better and offer winter recreation opportunities.
“Snowmobilers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers should be aware of current conditions,” said acting Summit District Ranger Sarah LaPlante. “Recent rain loosened the snow above Patterson Grade which caused an avalanche on the Hwy 108 snow trail, raising parts of it by as much as eight feet. The snow conditions make it very difficult for our trail grooming contractor to remove much of the avalanche. Visitors should be aware that likely won’t change at Patterson Grade for several weeks.”
Many other sections and areas of snow trails, including Eagle Meadows and Gooseberry/Crabtree snow trails have washed away, creating wide and deep ruts along and across the trail. These ruts may pose a hazard to those traveling along or on the trail and extreme caution is advised, LaPlante said.
It’s unclear whether the storm system scheduled to arrive Thursday will improve snow conditions, since both rain and snow are forecasted for below 6,000 feet. “We’ll have to wait and reassess conditions after the storms pass through and we can get our assessment teams out on the Forest again,” LaPlante said. “In the meantime, we encourage visitors to carefully plan their trips and include checking with the District Ranger Office for current snow conditions and known hazards.”
Calaveras District Ranger Ray Cablayan said Calaveras trails are groomed and in good shape. “Right now our winter trails along Highway 4 offer a chance to enjoy the snow, but be sure to check on conditions after the upcoming storm. Until the Summit Ranger District’s trails recover, come visit the Alpine or Spicer winter trails.”
Remember that conditions can change rapidly and hazardous conditions may not yet have been reported to Forest officials. We encourage all visitors to make smart, safe decisions about when and how to enjoy the Forest. Contact your local Ranger District Office for current information on road and weather conditions before traveling on the Forest.
