California Teachers Association Promises to Keep Standing with Students; Ready to Take on Challenges of Unqualified DeVos

Los Angeles, CA...The following statement is from CTA President Eric Heins on behalf of more than 325,000 educators and students: “The confirmation of Betsy DeVos as U.S. Education Secretary is yet another blow to our nation, most pointedly at the millions of students who come to our public schools each and every day. The administration could not have picked someone less qualified than DeVos—a billionaire businesswoman who knows nothing about what goes on in our public schools. All she sees are dollar signs, not students from all walks of life, seeking a public education which is the most basic civil right.

“Make no mistake this confirmation in no way means the DeVos-Trump education agenda will be imposed without a struggle. On the contrary, the bipartisan public outcry denies President Trump and DeVos any mandate to take over our public schools. The millions of Americans who came together, some who reached out to their Senators, walked, called, and emailed for the very first time, care deeply about public education and remain committed to take on the challenges that lie ahead. It’s that solidarity that gives us strength to forge ahead on behalf of our students.

“We sincerely appreciate the public outcry of support from educators, students, parents, civil rights and special education advocates in sending a strong, collective message to the White House that we’re watching, we’re active and we aren’t going anywhere. We’ll be there to reject any schemes to take money away from public schools and give it to private schools or corporate charter schools. Please join us by taking the pledge to ensure all California students receive the public education they need and deserve.”

California’s educators sent tens of thousands of emails to U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris who opposed the DeVos confirmation. And nationally, more than one million letters were sent and more than 80,000 phone calls were made to senators in Washington. From across the country this was part of an extensive educator effort that involved a major protest in Los Angeles, Jan. 28 with 800 educators and another in San Jose, Feb. 4 with more than 1,100. Educators also approved a resolution demanding the public education all students deserve and invite Californians to take the pledge to ensure all students can succeed.

DeVos is the LEAST of our probvlems...

Without addressing the pros and cons of his policies, Trump's chaotic and sometimes juvenile actions reduce his ability to make policies into law. Here are some examples:

A disorganized and chaotic roll out of his poorly vetted temporary immigration ban.

Discounting the stature and influence of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the director of national intelligence by making their attendance at National Security Council Principals Committee meetings by invitation only. In their place he has elevated alt-right ideologue Steve Bannon to permanent membership on that policymaking group.

Obsessively lying about the size of his electoral victory and the number of people at his inauguration. His Electoral College victory percentage ranked 46th out of 58 presidential elections, despite his claim that it was a “landslide.” America doesn’t care … he won. But Donald Trump cares.

Needlessly starting public fights with allies Mexico and Australia.

Backing down on his pledge to release his tax returns. Seventy-four percent of voters and a majority of Republicans think he should release them.

Disparaging the intelligence community by comparing it to Nazi Germany.

Calling the news media “dishonest” and “corrupt” when they write true, but critical, stories.

Failing to separate himself from his company. By giving up day-to-day management but retaining ownership, we will not know if Trump’s actions are intended for the good of the country or the good of the Trump Organization.

Responding to the statement, “Vladimir Putin is a killer,” with the comment, “There are a lot of killers, do you think our country is so innocent?” Equating America’s morality and conduct to that of despotic thug Putin is ignorant and un-American.

Disrespecting our independent judiciary by calling federal Judge James Robart a “so-called” judge and saying that he “put our country in such peril” because he issued a stay against Trump’s immigration ban.

Publicly disparaging the judicial system, the intelligence community, Congress, the press, foreign leaders and anyone else who disagrees with him is not the way to make progress.

These needless self-inflicted wounds hurt the president’s chances to realize the conservative policies that led his followers to elect him.

Thinking and acting as if he is all-powerful and cannot be wrong are dangerous characteristics for the man who controls our nuclear arsenal and is the leader of the free world.

With Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in the rearview mirror, Trump needs to accept that the election is over and he won. America wants its president to act like one.

We citizens have no direct influence on Trump, but Georgia senators Johnny Isakson and David Perdue, northeast Georgia Congressman Jody Hice and the other nine Georgia Republican representatives in Congress do have leverage.

They are our emissaries to the president, and with their Republican colleagues, they can work – and as a independent branch of government, must work – to curb his most destructive instincts.

Republicans elected Trump, they own him, and they need to make him grow up.

Dream on you liberal whiners. Trump is doing a great job and you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette. Schools are pretty good around here but in the inner cities there is chaos in the classroom. Kids are graduating with the skill level of 3rd grade and taxpayer monies are going to waste. It's (the education system) is broken and needs to be fixed. WTG Trump!!!

He is an interesting and odd duck. Doesn't drink or smoke so in some ways he has self control but is a complete wild card in others

She will destroy and gut the educational system in this country.

And thats exactly what needs to happen.
She was put there with that in mind.
Of course she doesn't speak the language of the flunky teachers unions, lazy parents and children of common core.
Fact is its time to open the door of the broken American education/indoctrination system, pitch in a grenade and re build it.

          Go TRUMP!

Go figure, the Teachers Union is upset their little game of cards may crumble as Teachers will have to compete for students!! Parents will get to choose the BEST place for their children and children will BE THE BENEFICIARIES of a new educational program rather than corrupt tenured teachers! CA public schools that are good have nothing to worry about, others that are a mess and NOT working will be suffer the consequences of failure. It's all about education now, not unions or substandard teachers. Thank President .trump for putting American families and our children's education at the forefront of system, finally a President beholden to no one except for the American people! BRAVO!!!

Charter schools over all, have equal performance at a higher price.
Like For profit health care, adding corporations to the education, quotient only adds cost- corporate profits. When you add a profit motive, you raise the price. Of course the corporations do a hard sell , they want to make $, but the tax payers pay the added cost with no benefit, how stupid is that?

Charter schools perform the same in testing- a fact, the difference is they cost more - the profit motive.

When you shut off Fox,Limbaugh you learn the truth.

Fox and hate radio is fake news.

I'll say this once. The reason we have Trump in the White House in the first place can be traced back to years of the downfalll of American education due to the Republican Party not backing public education in any form.

A glance at Craigslist will prove the quality of our local educator's work. I work with some of them and hold no regard for their ignorant and emotion-based opinions.

Strongest and worst union in the country! Teachers have NO accountability and principals have no power to change the situation.
