Oakdale Graduate Living Dream On The USS O'Kane

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-HICKAM, HI... A 2014 East Stanislaus High School graduate and Oakdale, California native is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the guided-missile destroyer, USS O'Kane. Seaman Apprentice Samuel Miller is a damage controlman aboard the forward-deployed Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer operating out of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

A Navy damage controlman is responsible for maintaining watertight integrity, emergency equipment associated with firefighting and shipboard flooding, plumbing repairs; welding fabrication and repairs; chemical, biological, and nuclear warfare detection and decontamination.

“As a little boy, I always wanted to be a firefighter,” said Miller. “We get to save peoples' lives and there is nothing better than that.”

O'Kane, measures approximately 500 feet and is powered by four gas turbines that allow the destroyer to achieve more than 30 mph in open seas.

According to Navy officials, destroyers are tactical multi-mission surface combatants capable of conducting anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare, as well as humanitarian assistance. Fast, maneuverable, and technically advanced, destroyers provide the required warfighting expertise and operational flexibility to execute any tasking overseas.

“Our Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific guided-missile destroyers are poised, trained, equipped and ready to deploy forward and support the Fleet,” said Rear Adm. John Fuller, Commander, Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific. “Working with friends and allies, our MIDPAC sailors provide sea control, advance maritime security, enhance regional stability, and foster continued prosperity in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.”

Approximately 30 officers and 300 enlisted men and women make up the ship's company. Their jobs are highly specialized and keep each part of the cruiser running smoothly, according to Navy officials. The jobs range from maintaining engines and handling weaponry to washing dishes and preparing meals.

“Hawaii is my dream command,” said Miller. “Being on a destroyer in Hawaii are dream orders. For me that dream has now been fulfilled.”

Challenging living conditions build strong fellowship among the crew, Navy officials explained. The crew is highly motivated, and quickly adapt to changing conditions. It is a busy life of specialized work, watches, and drills.

“Serving in the Navy means that we are protecting the world on land and sea,” said Miller. “The experience is amazing. I am proud that I get to serve the country not just for myself, but for everybody that benefits from my service.”

"Why Being There Matters"

On our planet, more than 70 percent of which is covered by water, being there means having the ability to act from the sea. The Navy is uniquely positioned to be there; the world's oceans give the Navy the power to protect America's interests anywhere, and at any time. Your Navy protects and defends America on the world's oceans. Navy ships, submarines, aircraft and, most importantly, tens of thousands of America's finest young men and women are deployed around the world doing just that. They are there now. They will be there when we are sleeping tonight. They will be there every Saturday, Sunday and holiday this year. They are there around the clock, far from our shores, defending America at all times.

Thank you very much for your support of the men and women in U.S. Navy, deployed around the clock and ready to protect and defend America on the world's oceans.
