Calaveras County's Celebrated Jumpers Hit The Road

Angels Camp, CA(Frogtown, USA)... Calaveras County's Celebrated Jumping Frogs soon leap into action for their annual public appearance leading up to the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, May 19-22 at Frogtown in Angels Camp. It circles the county and then winds up in Sacramento May 18 for the annual State Capitol Frog Jump. The frogs and their entourage of Frog Jump Committee members/handlers are traveling in luxury in the distinctive Frogmobile introduced last year. The van is wrapped with frog graphics - courtesy of donations from Angels Sewer and Drain and the Wintercreek Foundation. Graphics are by Eric Calialgro.

The frogs first hit the road on April 29, appearing at Michelson School at in Murphys at 1 p.m. The next stop is May 9 at Mountain Oaks School in San Andreas at 11:30 a.m.. On May 10 the frogs will be welcomed at Government Center in San Andreas for the annual jump pitting county departments against each other, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The tour continues May 11, visiting Copperopolis Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. - then proceeds to Christian Family Learning Center in Angels Camp for a jump event at 2:p.m. On May 13, the group will visit San Andreas Elementary School at 8 a.m. And continue on to West Point School for a 10:30 assembly.

The State Capitol Frog Jump is a long-standing tradition at which elected officials, legislative staffers and media representatives vie for bragging rights. The winner moves on to the Jumping Frog Jubilee Grand Finals on May 22. The capitol event is sponsored by Senator Tom Berryhill, who represents local Senate District 14.

In addition to exhibition jumping, the frogs and their handlers have lots to talk about. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Frog Jump World's Record. Lee Giudici and his frog Rosie the Ribiter leaped to fame with an unprecedented jump of 21 feet, five and ¾ inches in 1986. The 30- year anniversary of their record will be celebrated at this year's Fair on Kids Day, Thursday, May 19. Frog jumping will be free that day for kids 12 and under.
