We Request The Immediate Removal Of Commissioner Wooster ~ Letter To The Editor By Josh & Desiree Fleck

Angels Camp, CA....We request the immediate removal of Commissioner Wooster from his position following his offensive racial remarks made to the public at the Planning Commission meeting on March 3rd. Although we were not present when the statements were made, as residents of this community we are affected by this atmosphere of racism and subsequent condoning of this behavior by the Board of Supervisors....

We feel nothing would have been shared with the community about this had the Latino Legislative Caucus not sought removal of Mr. Wooster. Putting aside the moral wrong that was done, as an elected government official, his comments are legally and ethically questionable. It is clear he holds a very different respect for county Latino residents and this logically equates with racial bias and discrimination.

Regards Josh and Desiree Fleck

Way to go, Josh & Desiree!

Either come up with a much more sincere apology, Mr. Wooster, or consider yourself clubbed by your own stupidity. Aren't you a lawyer, man?!? Didn't they cover this in law law school?! Get sincere, or get out.

If that's the kind of lawyer our supervisors chose for our planning commission, than I think we really do need to consider whether or not he is competent at his job. What if he's prone to being a careless fool (and it appears that is exactly the case!) and the county gets in hot water due to his incompetence?!

I wonder how many of these people complaining about Mr. Wooster also call themselves "tolerant" and/or Christians who claim to believe in forgiveness, turning the other cheek, redemption, etc.?

Forgiveness comes after apology and repentance. So far Mr. Wooster's apology is more weasel-worded explanation than a genuine apology.

I believe in forgiveness, but the ball remains in Wooster's court. He needs to quit offering implausible explanations and simply apologize for making a racist (and poor) joke.

BTW, the comments associated with the Fleck's and with Al's earlier post show racism is alive and well in Calaveras County. It is not a surprise but it is very disappointing.

    Mr. and Mrs. Fleck,

I respectfully demand that your statement be pulled from the Pinetree. I base this on the fact that Mr. Wooster is an appointed official, not an "elected official" as you stated. This statement alone highlights your uneducated, biased view on the subject, and therefore eliminates you as a level headed, knowledgeable thinker. Please ask the Pinetree to remove your erroneous statement. If you can't get the facts right, please keep your opinions to yourself.

    Thank You,
    Michael F. Falvey
    Mtn. Ranch

P.S. If you are not insulted by derogatory statements, I wish you a happy St. Pattys Day to all Micks of the county.

Racism and prejudice must be condemned.

They should not have a place in our society. Everyone needs to promote the free exchange of information so that we can improve our lives.

Bigotry, name calling, prejudice and bullying must be eliminated.

    From Forbes Magazine, 2013:
Posted on: 2016-03-17 13:31:30   By: Anonymous

"Attempting to fence off the country is no answer to anything. It would be difficult for a generally free society with extensive borders to close out the rest of the world. Worse, to be effective such controls as ID cards, citizenship checks, workplace raids, employer sanctions, and more would undermine domestic liberties. Conservatives generally balk at "bigger government", but the aforementioned would create a large, and potentially wasteful, branch of bureaucracy- all funded by American taxpayers.

Anyway, immigration benefits the U.S. The economic advantages are significant. Many immigrants are natural entrepreneurs, establishing companies, creating jobs, and driving innovation. Well-educated and highly-trained foreign workers are inventive and productive. Expanded work forces increase business flexibility, allowing companies to quickly respond to changing demands. Larger labor forces also encourage specialization. Labor productivity rises as companies adjust to larger work forces and invest in employees.

Immigration seemingly depress wages for the least skilled workers. However, these are the last jobs that government should seek to protect. Moreover, the work force, like the economy, is not a fixed pie. Immigration makes a more innovative, flexible, and productive economy, leading to new and better jobs. The benefits rise over time, with an expanding economic pie.

Immigration offers a mix of cultural benefits and challenges, complicated but manageable. Unfortunately, perverse government policies exacerbate political and sovereignty problems."

So, if you WANT an even larger governmental bureaucracy, and a fruitless, mindless plan to waste our tax dollars trying to prevent undocumented workers from entering out country, and you don't really give a damn about fiscal impact, and, bottom line, you just hate Mexicans....VOTE REPUBLICAN. We'll be back in a recession in no time....

Why is it that people, including the writer of the Forbes article, continue to confuse legal immigration with illegal immigrants?

Legal, controlled immigration is good. A flood of random people illegally running across the border is not so good for the country.

America has TWO borders, so it's obvious that you're referring to the Canadians, right? Yeah, not so much. See how subtle racism can be, how seemingly reasonable. Approximately 60% of immigrants to this country are non-Hispanic. But there's no talk of a Canadian wall, or Russian wall, or Chinese, or Indian etc., etc.

Man, do I get people upset when I work hard & mind my own business, love Jesus, & EARN the American Dream. Lazy people alway gotta' envy & covet the results of other peoples hard work- you want what I got? Get off your butt & work for it!!! Be proud of starting with nada, and working your way up the ladder. You want to get out of poverty & hate? Give your life to God, and He will reward you with material & spiritual riches. Don't expect me to be ashamed for being a 2nd generation LEGAL immigrant. My grandmother came to Calif. and made a life for my dad, me & my bros. & sisters- she worked day & night with a hopeful & willing heart, & was loved & rewarded for it. She taught us all the value of Love of God & country, love of family, & 4 of us were in the service risking our lives for our country. And still you GOP folks hate me even tho I represent everything you believe in. I have always been a conservative Catholic but will change my vote this year- I see which side of the bread my butter is on! You guys just hate us for our skin. The best revenge is a full, successful life serving God. Go in peace, haters.

                    See...proves the point beautifully:

Racist Americans willfully refuse to acknowledge the difference between undocumented immigrant workers and second and third generation descendants of immigrants. To those who are stubbornly afraid for their own wealth and status, and are ceaselessly looking for someone to blame, all people of color are monsters. That's what Lopez is saying about "dirty looks" in Angels Camp. Bigots don't give a damn about the concrete facts of Lopez' immigration status. He's brown, and a threat, and therefore must go and live with the Flecks. It is proving increasingly difficult for the Mexican haters to generate enough smoke to camouflage themselves and their fearful, vicious lies.

We need to unite as Americans. Not mexicans, germans, chinese, canadians, or whatever. Illegal immigrants are an invasive species if you are an American. The hyphenated American (i.e. Mexican-American, Asian-American, European-American) will be the down fall of this country. Regardless of your race, ethnicity, color or whatever, are you and American. But im just a xenophobe.

If you know any Mexican people, then you'll know this is a non-derogatory term used to refer to US citizens. Mostly because the term "American" does not make sense to the rest of the Americans (all those people who live in the continent named "America", which is every body from Alaska to Argentina), and the word "Estadounidense" (UnitedStatean) is too long.

Folklore says it was generated when the US invaded mexico, wearing green uniforms, and the people shouted at them "Green Go Home". Nah, that's bs...

With time it has lost all derogatory status and was turned into the most common word to refer to any US citizen.
"Hey, que pasa pinche gringo! How is it going!!"

The thing is, I'm guessing that you don't really KNOW any Mexican folks, as friend and/or neighbors. It's so easy to hate what you don't understand.

Nope, not at all....as I explained above, it's more like " buddy" or "hey, man". And, if you had any actual friendly association with a Mexican person, you'd know this....The newest term for white guys of a certain age is "bro", or sometimes "brah", which is a shortened form of "brother" from African American and Hawaiian culture- you can easily see how the use of "bro" evolved. It's no longer generally considered offensive to most folks....tiresome, maybe, but not offensive.

But there's always an overly sensitive bigot, a quivering powder keg of affront and rage, looking for offense in the tiniest of linguistic quirks. It's like a mirror of so-called political correctness with a nasty, racist, conservative twist....bigots fall back on language when they need to feel persecuted. "Those stinky Mexicans (or Syrians, or Muslims, or African Americans, or women, or LGBT folks, or whatever) are calling me names!" The same people cannot, or will not, see the difference between "Redskins" and "Braves".

Racists want to convince us with their rhetoric that ingrained prejudice is simply common sense. In reality, racism is disgusting, divisive and vicious. It is based on mindless fear and hate, and the rage of the "powerless", who are, for the most part, simply mean and lazy.

"Mean and lazy" are not conservative values....at least not yet. There's always Donald Trump.

From the Supreme Court:
“The First Amendment demands a tolerance of ‘verbal tumult, discord, and even offensive utterance,’ as ‘necessary side effects of … the process of open debate,’ Cohen v. California, 403 U.S. 15, 24-25 (1971). But we have never expressed doubt that a government employer may bar its employees from using offensive utterance to members of the public or to the people with whom they work."

That said, Mr. Wooster should voluntarily resign. His public remarks were offensive and stupid.

Calaveras County Planning Commissioner calls Mexicans “Invasive Species” Posted by Vanguard Administrator Date, 3/1
Posted on: 2016-03-17 00:39:19   By: Anonymous

Just in case you weren't there to see the circus for yourself:

"Citizens of Calaveras County are expressing shock and anger over recent statements made by a public official indicating that Mexican people should be removed from Calaveras County.

Planning Commissioner Kelly Wooster was caught on film joking that people from Mexico should be regarded as “Invasive Species” during a Calaveras County public meeting on March 3.Wooster, an attorney by trade, was appointed as Planning Commissioner in 2013.The meeting was called to address policies planning to deal with the eradication of encroaching species which are not native to Calaveras County. Members of the panel shared a momentary brain storm in finding the exact wording for the measure to include both plant and animal life.

One panelist suggested “maybe we could just say ‘invasive species’” as another responds “yeah, that’s good. It kinda covers everything.” Wooster then retorts “Including people from Mexico?” Some in the panel laugh while another states “Whoa, I’m not going to comment on that.” They continued to laugh awkwardly while one board member points out “The internet will be afire with comments on that.”Locals have indeed taken to the internet to voice their concerns over Wooster’s racists comment. While some attribute his misstep to a momentary lapse of judgement coupled with bad humor, many are calling his remark inexcusable and are circulating petitions to ask for his removal. The petition is currently just a few people shy of its 100 signature goal.Whether in jest or genuinely, his implications were that it would be wishful thinking to indicate that Calaveras County would “support efforts to eradicate” Mexican people and “encourage practices that reduce their spread.”

This blatantly racist comment is not only wildly inappropriate, but also raises concerns about Wooster’s ethical eligibility to serve in public office.

Points also being mentioned by Wooster’s dissenters is the ironic fact that California was once part of Mexico, and that individuals of European descent are not indigenous to Calaveras County. Even more upsetting is the dehumanizing slight that Mexican people would be included in the subgroup of plant and animal species. Approximately 11% of the population in Calaveras County identifies as Mexican American."

Immigrants come to America to find jobs that would benefit their own situation and employers give jobs to people who are willing to work for their business at an agreed upon wage (be it above or below minimum wage). What makes us gasp at the idea of paying someone below minimum wage is because the evil being done is not an intrinsic evil. It’s a functional evil: not following the arbitrary law of the land that you live in. So who's guilty here? Employers or workers? Would undocumented immigrants come to the U.S if millions of private citizens and employers didn't break the law? Hmmmmm....

You have obiviously never had to work with illeagl immigrants. Like you said "for their situation" very selfish and back stabby. They band together and create such a hostile working enviorment for the legal worker that it is intolerable for any legal worker to remain employed with them. This has occured because of the sympathy towards them by people like you. But sooner or later if will affect you or your privilaged family and by then it will be to late senoir.

I have a 220lb steel beam from a greenhouse I was assembling (instructions in English) drop on my head/shoulder by an alien, it almost killed me, and I was off the job, replaced by 2 aliens in 10 minutes by Mexicans with cellphones.

I am stunned at the amount of racial and intolerant people that live in this community!
From the comments that I've been reading on this page, just who do you think you are?
This country used to pride itself on being a melting pot, made up of people all over the world. What happened?
I was not born in the US, I was born in Europe, immigrated to this country when I was a child. This beautiful country... The land of the Free and the Home of the Brave... Has become a laughing stock! This country is now full of hatred and bigotry and a lack of respect in general. I thought we as a country had grown past these intolerances, this county is proving me wrong. This is supposed s non-violent, non-racist, safe place for children to grow up. What are we teaching our children? How to hate? How to be intolerant. How to be racist?
It makes me very sad to see not only our community, buy the whole country is going to hell in a hand basket!!!
Get s grip people! Learn tolerance! Learn acceptance! Get s grip!!!

Wow....closet bigots really get upset- especially if they can get away with lying and embellishing their "poor me, I'm a victim of the Mexican hordes" stories. Yeah, well, I've been replaced at various jobs over the years, by people more, and sometimes less, qualified than me- it's called "life in a capitalist free market system", and that system is often held to be sacred for some pseudo-conservatives.

Sorry, racists- ya' got nothin' but you foaming, hateful bile as a defense for your bigotry. You just hate Mexicans, not immigrants- you could care less about undocumented immigrants from Sweden, Spain, or Canada. You heartily accept anyone, unless they're brown, and don't pass your racial muster test for being American. But hate is a protected right for us Americans- you have the right to dislike anybody you want. But racists are such cowards- they always have to have some BS story about their sad travails with the "wetbacks" they've encountered. Racial bigots are such whining martyrs, and they are really tiresome. And, what's worse, they know it....and just whine louder.

Yes, I have had Mexican classmates, work mates and neighbors and saw no particular fault in them. Many were, in fact, trusted good friends. Many were descendants of Mexican Californians who lived here before we won the war with Mexico. Remember, there were many flags over California before it became a state. That includes the Mexican flag.

How ever you'd like to classify the delivery of the words, the important factor is the classification of a group of people whom he classified as an invasive species. Bringing this to light is not to bring about hate, but promote tolerance and ensure no one is treated differently under the laws, even those in Calaveras County!
