Thoughts on Celebrity Internet Sites and the Downside of Living in Whoville~By Karen Wildwood

I have a brand new time wasting hobby, just in time for the holidays. Some of you may question whether any of us have time for anything else but the holidays during the holidays, but don’t all of us have something that if given half a chance we’d gladly indulge in to the exclusion of many other things? Such as writing holiday cards, going holiday shopping, etc. etc. etc....

My new pastime is following celebrity happenings on the internet. It’s an amazing thing that we in the general public, otherwise known as commoners, can follow every move these hapless individuals make, want to make or even think about making.

I reluctantly admit – well, not that reluctantly, this is a web column after all - that I tune into TMZ at least once a day, sometimes more, just to see what’s happening with the celebrities in Whoville, otherwise known as Hollywood. Most of the stories you should take with a grain of salt, and what really gets me, besides the sketchiness of the stories themselves, is the complete lack of regard for the subjects at hand and the fact that a lot of the time there’s video to accompany those stories.

It’s apparent that the video clips are chosen with great care to ensure that that the celebrities look, well, not so good. In fact, most of them are shown in their very worst light. Unless, of course, the quasi-journalistic celebrity site actually likes the celebrity that is being written about, then at least the story is told with a modicum of decency. If the site doesn’t like the celebrity in question, get ready for name-calling at the very least along with a very unfavorable video clip at the worst.

Of course, the headlines for the videos have little to do with the actual content, much like most news today, unless it comes from a highly respected news outlet, like, let’s say, the Wall Street Journal. So, anyone who tunes into the video needs to be prepared for less than they thought they were going to get and a whole lot of some celebrity just trying to get away. Many times I sit and watch thinking, ‘that poor girl’ when I see how the paparazzi hounds the particular celebrity they are going after. Then it occurs to me that the reason why the notables are hounded is because people like me are actually watching the product the paps turn out.

And what a product it is. Not only do the paparazzi get paid insane amounts for the photos and video clips they can sell, the sites themselves are making a killing from the advertising dollars they’re raking in. How can a regular commoner figure this out? Just look at the advertising on these sites. There is no expense spared in their ads. You’ll see the very latest in pop-ups, graphics and amazing advertising copy to capture your interest, which just goes to show how many people are actually logging on to those sites. On the internet all you have to do is look at the quality of the ads along with who’s advertising to see how much traffic the site is actually getting.

So, this holiday season when you have to deal with the crowds and the general craziness just be thankful that the paps aren’t getting paid insane amounts to get photos of you having one too many eggnogs at the company party. Or, taking a sneaking up behind you photo showing the weighty after effects of too many holiday treats. Sometimes being a commoner has its rewards.
