CalRecycle-Calaveras County Butte Fire Debris Removal Project

San Andreas, CA...Beginning Tuesday, September 29 th , the Calaveras County Environmental Management Agency
initiated efforts under the CalRecycle-Calaveras County Butte Fire Debris Removal Project. Two teams from the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) began to remove household hazardous waste and conduct asbestos assessment and sampling from residential properties in the areas affected by the Butte Fire. DTSC’s primary focus is to evaluate hazardous waste such as asbestos and remove hazardous waste such as paints, batteries, electronic wastes, and propane tanks under 30 gallons.

An additional three teams from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be joining the efforts commencing Tuesday, October 6, 2015. Work has commenced in the following areas
● Teams continue to work the Western side of Jesus Maria Road and Old Gulch Road
● Teams will continue work towards the North side of Whiskey Slide Road
● Plan to then move towards Ponderosa Way, south of Mountain Ranch Road and then into
East Murray Creek Road working Northeast

Initial site assessments were conducted by staff of Calaveras County Environmental Management
Agency (EMA) from Friday September 18, through Friday September 30, 2015. The initial site
assessments included preliminary identification of structures affected by the fires including, Single
Family Dwellings, accessory buildings, domestic water wells and sewage disposal systems. The Debris
Removal Teams will be referencing the initial site assessments conducted by staff of Calaveras County
EMA.

Properties are beginning to be watered down to control dust and to prevent ash from becoming
airborne. Contractors will begin going into the affected areas to confirm footprints of structures and
their foundations prior to Debris Removal Teams commencing the physical removal of any debris.
Please note : Calaveras County will not be removing refrigeration units that were not affected by the
fire.

If you have any questions and/or if you do not want DTSC on your property, please immediately
contact Calaveras County Environmental Health at (209) 754-6399.

Fire Recovery website: http://www.butte.calaverasgov.us/EnvironmentalHealth.aspx or call (209)
