Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) Awards Grants for 2015

Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) has awarded twelve (12) competitive grants for 2015. The combined amount of these grants equals $57,743. The three initiatives applicable for this grant period were: Aging in Place for Seniors, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and the Cultural Initiative. CCF believes that these initiatives address important needs to be filled in Calaveras County communities....

Eighteen grant applications and proposals were received during 2015’s grant cycle period with total funds requested equaling $113,434. Most geographic areas in our county were represented including: Burson, Rail Road Flat, West Point, San Andreas, Mokelumne Hill, Valley Springs, Murphys, Angels Camp and everywhere in between.

Calaveras County’s aging senior population was the beneficiary of 3 grants totaling $24,464. Common Ground Senior Services, Inc.’s “Home Delivered Meals” (aka Meals-on-Wheels) provides nutritious food for those who need extra assistance; Habitat for Humanity’s “Critical Home Repairs” will help seniors make their homes more comfortable and safe through assistance with home repairs; and Tri-Dam Lions Community Service Corporation will be installing new HVAC units at the Burson Community Center.

Four projects dealing with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) initiative were awarded funding in the amount of $19,283. Bret Harte High School’s Cybullfrogs/Lego Robotics project (already in existence) will be expanded to include more students with additional kits containing hardware and software for creating programmable, customizable robots. Civil Developers will use technology to place science and math tutoring into the hands of our community’s foster and at-risk youth. Friends of Railroad Flat Elementary School will offer workshops from Mad Science, a leading science enrichment provider for children in pre-6th grade. Girl Scouts will offer girls a 4-day, 7/hr a day STEM Sampler Day Camp that offers hands-on learning in those fields.

The third initiative, “Cultural,” was designed to include projects focused on enhancing culture through art, music, theatre, history, dance and more. Five grants were awarded amounting to $13,996. Angels Camp Museum will provide museum field trips to Calaveras County children in outlying areas who require transportation to the Museum. Friends of Rail Road Flat School will provide “Kids in Motion Dance Class” to round out the school’s offerings to its enrichment program. Mokelumne Hill Community Historical Trust will offer a Summer Music and Arts Program. Art Camp is two weeks long and offered to children (ages 4-13) from the Calaveras Unified School District. The music portion offers Friday night evening concerts at Moke Hill’s Shutter Tree Park. Local musicians provide folk, country, traditional, light classical and other styles of music. Murphys Creek Theatre will stage Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale” being performed at the Feeney Park amphitheater in Murphys from June 19th through July 18. Valley Springs Youth Center will offer “The Race to Cultural Awareness” where the students are offered opportunities to express themselves through plays, music, poetry, writings, drawing and learn to make their own videos.

CCF is proud to be able to offer funding from the Foundation’s Grant Fund and the San Francisco Foundation, in memory of Lloyd Federlein. Other Donor Advised Funds utilized this year were: Calaveras County Employees Fund, Jackson Rancheria Casino Hotel Fund, Stanley M. “Sam” Houston Fund, the Cultural Enhancement Initiative Fund and the STEM Initiative Fund. CCF is most grateful to these contributors, as well as all our other donors, for their generosity and desire to help fund worthwhile and innovative projects here in our local communities. Since it’s inception in 2000, CCF has provided (including this funding) over $978,000 in competitive grants, scholarships and assistance.
