Looking old and weathered encouraged by local club
San Andreas, CA...While we attempt to delay our own inevitable aging, bonsai experts embrace the opposite as it relates to their miniature trees. Specimens looking old and even ancient with weather-beaten trunks and twisted limbs are prized and valued for their natural artistic beauty...
A free public demonstration at the Mother Lode Bonsai Club on Saturday, April 4 will focus on two essential methods of increasing the illusion of age: jin and shari. The club meeting will begin at 10 a.m. with the demonstration following immediately after by David Anderson, a sensei (teacher) and bonsai grower in Pine Grove. Location is the former Calaveras County Water District office at 423 E. St. Charles Street (Hwy. 49) in San Andreas.
Both jin and shari are techniques for producing the appearance of deadwood. Using special working tools, the bonsai creator’s goal is to produce a tree with the look of having struggled to survive the elements of weather, including wind and lightning. The difference is that jin is applied to the tip of a trunk or branch while shari is located near the front of the tree’s trunk and resembles a shallow wound surrounded by living bark.
Bonsai enthusiasts from novices to experienced hobbyists are invited to attend the demonstration on techniques for aging trees. For more information, contact Bob Dean, club president at (209) 754-5887.
