American Cancer Society, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and KVIE Host Special Preview Screening of CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES

Sacramento, CA – March 10, 2015 -- The American Cancer Society, in partnership with the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and KVIE Public Television, will host a free community preview screening of CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES on March 25 at Sacramento’s Crest Theatre, followed by an expert panel discussion on the importance of continued, innovative research into the causes, cures and prevention of cancer. This riveting and powerful PBS documentary is set for broadcast nationwide, beginning March 30, 2015...

CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES is directed by Barak Goodman and produced by Ken Burns based on Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee’s 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.” The three-part, six-hour documentary series will air March 30, 31, and April 1st at 9 p.m. on KVIE. The series presents a captivating historical look at cancer with a focus on patient stories and scientific progress throughout the decades.

The community screening takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 25 at the Crest Theatre, 1013 K St. in Sacramento. A panel, including lung cancer survivor Tris Imboden, drummer for the band “Chicago,” and leading Northern California cancer experts will hold a discussion immediately following the 40-minute abridged version of the documentary.

Media availability with panelists at 5:30 p.m. or upon request.

“The screening event here in Sacramento will be just one of many happening across the country over the next month,” said Dr. Mack Roach, American Cancer Society Medical/ Scientific Officer, California Division Board Member. “Together, we’ll witness under a microscope how cancer research develops, who it affects and how we can eliminate it once and for all. With this much attention focused on cancer, its days are numbered.”

Ralph de Vere White, MD, director of the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, is thrilled to help generate a discussion about cancer with everyone in Sacramento. “The Emperor of All Maladies masterfully describes the complexities of conquering this disease and helps emphasize the importance of investments in molecular medicine to truly reverse the trajectory of this disease," he said.

David Lowe, KVIE president and general manager, agrees. “We appreciate the partnership we have with UC Davis that furthers conversations about health issues locally, whether through our ViewFinder series or in conjunction with the presentation of national stories,” said Lowe. “Now with a topic like cancer that will affect all Americans, either directly or through loved ones, we look forward to more understanding of the disease through the powerful storytelling of Ken Burns. And we thank the American Cancer Society for extending its support of the film through this screening event.”

In conjunction with the documentary series, WETA and production supporters have launched one of the largest, most comprehensive engagement programs in the history of documentary filmmaking. In addition to screenings of the documentary series, the campaign will include educational material, participation in major medical and health conferences, and a robust digital footprint. Sloan Foundation, Kovler Fund, The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Cancer Society, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and PBS.
