New KVIE Doc on Alzheimer’s premieres February 11 at 7 p.m... Screening at KVIE Studio Tuesday, February 10 at 5:30 p.m.

Sacramento, CA... Every 67 seconds, someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease—the most common form of dementia. With 10,000 Baby Boomers now turning age 65 each day, researchers in our community are racing to find a cure, and alleviate the burden that this memory-robbing disease places on the 5 million people currently living with Alzheimer’s....

KVIE’s latest ViewFinder documentary, Fading Away: Alzheimer’s takes viewers inside the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, and explores the local research being done to understand this disease with no known cure.

While current medications relieve the symptoms temporarily, the search is on for a treatment that will alter the course of this progressive and often fatal disease. And there’s another cost associated with Alzheimer’s: over time, many caregivers experience serious health problems from the effects of stress.

Through candid interviews, this documentary shows viewers the hopes and challenges of the men and women who live with Alzheimer’s. Sacramento resident Ollie Doolittle, a retired Army veteran and postal worker, shares his experience with Mild Cognitive Impairment, as his wife, Levarn, gathers support and plans for what’s to come. Viewers will also meet Robby Colvin, a former Mayor of Placerville, whose disease has progressed to the point where safety is now an issue. In Roseville, David Uribe, a father and husband, shares his dilemma as he considers placing his wife, Eileen, in full-time memory care.

And we hear from Congressman John Garamendi who, after caring for his mother-in-law with Alzheimer’s, has become a major advocate for Alzheimer’s research. Witness how Garamendi is sounding the alarm in our nation’s capital—calling for money for research and increased support systems for families.

As patients, advocates, and doctors call for more research, funding for Alzheimer’s studies remains well under that given to diseases such as HIV/AIDS and cancer. As doctors and scientists push forward with the resources they have, they’re making remarkable discoveries. This documentary takes viewers inside the labs at UC Davis and Sutter Health, documenting how experts are tracking changes happening inside the brains of living Alzheimer’s patients.

A screening of ViewFinder: Fading Away — Alzheimer’s will be held at KVIE Studio in Sacramento Tuesday, Feb. 10. The event will include hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m., the screening at 6 p.m., and a Q&A session with producer Karen Christian and Dr. Charles DeCarli, director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Center at UC Davis. RSVP at http://www.kvie.org/rsvp/fading_away/#.VL_7osHjHvw.twitter.

This screening is sponsored by NorthStar Rancho Cordova. As part of KVIE’s Focus on Health, this episode was sponsored by UC Davis Health System. The ViewFinder series is sponsored by SAFE Credit Union.
