Mark Twain Medical Center Awards over $25,000 in Community Grants To Area Not-For-Profit Organizations

San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) has selected several Calaveras County not-for-profit organizations to receive the Mark Twain Medical Center Community Grant for 2014. “On behalf of Mark Twain Medical Center, we are pleased to award over $25,000 in community grants this year,” announced Craig Marks, Hospital President. “The Mark Twain Medical Center Community Grants Program is designed to support not-for-profits that collaborate to address community health needs, particularly those that focus on underserved populations. Therefore, the projects to be funded must involve collaboration with 3 other local organizations and be linked to MTMC. Each of these selected organizations provides invaluable services to our community, and we are thankful for all that they do.”

Craig Marks, President/CEO, Mark Twain Medical Center, Tasha Unninayar, Dr. Thompson, and Susan Deax-Keirns, Mind Matters Clinic; Jennifer Grabowski and Mike Pierce, DRAIL; Mary Ellen Sousa-Hiner, Director and Co-Founder for Creative Support Alternatives; Larry Cornish, COO, Mark Twain Medical Center; and (front) Barry Smith Executive Director, DRAIL.

The hospital honored grant recipients at an awards luncheon held January 13th 2015. To date, more than $326,000 has been awarded to Calaveras organizations by the MTMC Community Grants Program. The Mark Dignity Health Community Grants Program varies according to the size of each hospital Applicants must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or have a fiscal agent that is a 501(c)(3) organization and capable of administering the funds; the project or program must be a response to the health priorities identified in the local Dignity Health hospital’s community health assessment or benefit plan, and the project to be funded must involve collaboration with a minimum of two other organizations
and/or with a Dignity Health hospital in our community.

This year’s honoree, Transitioning Youth Program, includes the following organizations:
Mind Matters Clinic (has served 800 families in addressing autism, attention deficit
hyperactivity disorders, and learning disabilities);
Disability Resource Agency for Independent Living (DRAIL)(supports the independence of
individuals with disabilities through resources, advocacy and services);and
Creative Support Alternatives (provides Supported Living Services and Independent Living
Services to people with developmental disabilities).

"We are thankful to the Mark Twain Medical Center for showing their financial support and awarding
our project for this Grant,” stated Dr. Ryan Thompson, Founder and CEO of the Mind Matters Clinic.

“We are excited to collaborate with DRAIL and Creative Support Alternatives to move forward with a
ground breaking new program that addresses the needs of individuals disabled by the Autism Spectrum
Disorder and ADHD. These individuals have historically fallen through the cracks and with this new
Transitioning Youth Program we will assist them in gaining independence and transitioning to living
meaningful lives."

The MTMC Executive Leadership Team carefully evaluated the programs to determine which programs
best address the unmet health needs as revealed in MTMC Community Needs Assessment. Twelve local
nonprofit organizations submitted proposals, requesting a total of $85,500.

“We're excited to be part of a collaborative effort that brings our service community closer together,”
stated Mary Ellen Sousa-Hiner, Director and Co-Founder for Creative Support Alternatives. “Mark
Twain Medical Center, Mind Matters Clinic, DRAIL, and Creative Support Alternatives can all bring
something to the table in terms of areas of expertise. The project provides greater opportunities to build
closer relationships, ultimately leading to increased community capacity to respond to some very real
needs, especially those associated with youth and families who are touched by autism and related
disabilities.”
