Columbia College Community Chorus Seeking Additional Singers
The Columbia College Community Chorus is currently about 45 members strong, and additional voices are being recruited, especially men for the tenor and bass parts. The Chorus originated from a confederation of church choirs known as the Inter-Church Choir which performed bi-annually at Christmas and Easter. With the founding of Columbia College, the chorus became a part of the school curriculum and remains so to this day. Most members of the Community Chorus have ...
come back every semester for years, while some have joined very recently. All ages are represented, from young college students to retirees.
After 30 years as its director, John Carter, a popular instructor at Columbia College, retired last May. Dr. Daryl Hollinger who was well-known for his choral conducting and musical compositions in the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area, took over the reins in August and has one concert set under his belt already. Daryl is a talented organist and composer, and the chorus is enjoying singing under his expert direction.
Some experience with choral singing is desired, especially the ability to blend with the other voices. There are also opportunities to sing solo parts in the concerts. Rehearsals are at the Red Church on Washington Street in Sonora on Monday
evenings, 6:30 to 9:00 pm. If interested, come to the rehearsal on Monday, January 26, to sing through the music with the group and talk with the director. For more information, call Chorus Manager Carl Rudolph at 586-9905.
After practicing weekly for almost four months, the Community Chorus will perform two concerts at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Sonora April 25 and 26, with John Rutter's Requiem as the major piece. Other songs include African American spirituals, Renaissance madrigals and folk songs from around the world. Dr. Hollinger said, "I am excited about the music we are working on for our spring program. It represents some of my favorite choral pieces, in addition to some pieces that are new to me. One of my favorite sections for this concert is a group of folk songs from around the world, including two special songs that I have used in the past on my European tours: Ezulwini, an African traditional and Schpinn, Schpinn, my own arrangement of a German folk song." He added, "I love working with singers in creating a beautiful choral sound with great diction and blend. My goal is to have fun while challenging the chorus to be the best they can be."
