Summit Ranger District to Conduct a Prescribed Burn
Sonora, CA… The Summit Ranger District will conduct a low-intensity prescribed burn on 1,186 acres of forested land, when weather conditions line up advantageously. “Approximately 75 acres will be ignited daily when conditions align to allow for a successful understory burn,” said District Fire Manager, Greg Marfil. “Ignitions are linked to favorable weather, fuel moisture levels and air quality factors. That means we will burn on some days while strategically pausing on others.”....
Like other burns being conducted on Stanislaus National Forest, the Dry Meadow burn is aimed at reducing the threat of high intensity fire.
The targeted area for this burn is northwest of Beardsley Lake and adjacent to Forest Service Roads 5N02 (Beardsley Road) and 5N22. Smoke could be visible along these roads as well as the Highway 108 corridor. During the evening and early morning hours, smoke could also linger in the canyons.
“Though no one likes smoky conditions created by a fire,” said Greg, “prescribed burns are done in accordance with the Tuolumne County Air Pollution Control District.” Smoke dispersal is better when fires are planned in conjunction with favorable weather patterns. Smaller portions of the landscape can be burned under the more controlled conditions of a prescribed burn. “That lessens impacts to neighboring communities while allowing us to achieve important fuel reduction goals,” said Greg.
Since this fire is a planned event, please do not report it as a wildland fire.
