AmeriCorps Returns to Protect Wilseyville Woodlands
Wilseyville, CA...A team of nine AmeriCorps National Civilian Conservation Corps (NCCC) members have returned to assist Camp Lodestar with fire prevention and infrastructure improvement from November 6 through December 19. Camp Lodestar has hosted retreat groups and wilderness classes for over 40 years. Dedicated to fostering appreciation for the environment of Calaveras County and providing a safe retreat space for visiting groups, the camp is an integral part of the Wilseyville community....
The NCCC team will clear brush to create defensible spaces around Lodestar’s facilities in addition to maintaining the trails that connect the 400 acre camp. NCCC will also improve infrastructure by replacing over 500 feet of water piping and restoring the roof on a primary residence.
“This work has been needed for a long time,” explained Jeff Clark, Director of Camp Lodestar, “but finances and other considerations have moved it down the priority list. NCCC being here makes it possible to get this work done.”
This is the second year NCCC has served the Wilseyville community at Camp Lodestar. Over 60 NCCC members served at the camp in October to learn how to safely operate chainsaws and cleared over one ton of flammable brush.
The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and its FEMA Corps units engage 2,800 young Americans in a full-time, 10-month commitment to service each year. AmeriCorps NCCC members address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, and urban and rural development; FEMA Corps members are solely dedicated to disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery work. The programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). CNCS is the federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads President's national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
