An Afternoon Stroll In Calaveras County ~By John Hamilton
Sheep Ranch, CA....Yesterday we had to take a drive to the Rail Road Flat area. On these errands we usually take the back way even if the road is a bit bumpier and it may take us a couple of minutes longer. It is usually worth it as no matter how hectic the day going down Sheep Ranch Road tends to drop the stress level down quite a bit. We frequently see sheep grazing in "town" but yesterday was special....

The sheep were grazing and lounging near the Central Calaveras Fire Station when a couple approached on their afternoon walk. The sheep as if on cue fell into step with them and followed them as they walked.
That to me sums up why many of us live here. This area is special! With the vast elevation changes in a relatively short time we have micro climates, varied communities, and scenery from farmland, to cattle ranches, lakes, streams, giant sequoias, alp like mountains, forests, aspens, wine country, mountain towns and a rich palate of people places and things.
For a small, rural county this is one of the most varied places on the planet. We have spoken to several people who have traveled the world and decided that our little corner of the world offered more than anyplace they have visited. We tend to agree!
