CCWD Restores Water Service After Long Night For Repair Crews

Arnold, CA...After a long night of hard work by Calaveras County Water District field staff members, two leaks in an aging 12-inch water main were repaired and water service was restored to the Arnold area. The first of the two leaks was reported just before noon on Wednesday, October 22, and was estimated to affect about 500 people. A break in the main water line was sending a stream of water down a natural drainage in the area. CCWD crews began turning off the water serving most of downtown Arnold and the surrounding subdivisions at around 2 p.m. Wednesday. While crews were repairing the first leak, a second leak in the same pipeline was reported beneath the pavement of Blagen Road about 1 mile from the initial break....

In order to shut down the water flow to the second leak, crews had to shut off water service to most of Arnold, which significantly expanded the number of people with no water or low water pressure. Field staff said it took them until around midnight to complete the repair of the second water leak and restore water service to the Arnold area.

After the leak is repaired, customers may experience brown water and air in their water lines. Even if the water is slightly brown, it is completely safe to drink. If the water is discolored, the District recommends that customers turn on an outside water line in order to flush their personal plumbing systems. Wait until the water runs clear and the system should function normally. In light of the ongoing drought, please only flush water lines if absolutely necessary.

The water main that broke twice within the same day is called Ebbetts Pass Reach 3A. Many repairs have been made to the water main within the past few years. This pipeline was installed in the 1960s and has nearly reached the end of its useful life, which is why CCWD is planning to replace the entire pipeline as part of its Capital Renovation and Repair program. According to CCWD District Engineer Charles Palmer, if all goes according to plan, the project will go out to bid in spring 2015 and construction will begin next summer.
