369 Pounds of Medications Collected in Calaveras County During "Drop The Drugs" Day

Calaveras County, CA...An impressive 369 pounds of unused and expired medications were collected during Calaveras County’s most recent “Drop the Drugs” Day on Saturday, September 27, 2014. “This is a successful program that continues to take hundreds of pounds of prescription drugs out of our community and off our streets,” said Deputy Josh Shemenski, who coordinated the ....

In cooperation with the DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, officers from both Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department and Angels Camp Police Department manned drop-off stations from 10am until 2pm in Murphys, Angels Camp, San Andreas, and at Toyon Middle School. Drugs collected included both prescription and over-the-counter medicines.

Drugs collected at “Drop the Drugs” days are incinerated, which is the safest and most environmentally sensitive method of disposal.

Northern California had 179 collection sites, hosted by 116 law enforcement agencies that collected 12 tons of unwanted, unused, and expired medications which were converted into energy through DEA community partner Covanta Energy, Crows Landing, California. The safe and secure collection and disposal of these medications not only saves lives, but protects the environment and ecosystem.

Calaveras County has hosted semi-annual drug disposal days since Spring 2010 and in that time, the Sheriff’s office has removed almost 1,600 pounds of drugs from our community. “Drop the Drugs” events are sponsored by the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, Angels Camp Police Department, Calaveras County Office of Education, Calaveras County Behavioral Health Service, and the Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention.

Community members who missed the event can drop off drugs during business hours at a permanent Drug Drop Box at the new Sheriff’s office, 1045 Jeff Tuttle Drive, San Andreas, CA.

For more information regarding the safe disposal of unused medicines, the public may contact Deputy Josh Shemenski at 209-754-6386.
