ARC Art Featured At Hovey In October
Murphys, CA...The artwork of developmentally and intellectually disabled members of The Arc of Amador and Calaveras will be featured the month of October at Hovey Winery Tasting Room, 350 A Main St., Murphys. An artist’s reception will be held in their honor from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday Oct. 12. Complimentary appetizers will be served and wine will be available by the glass for $5. “We have found that all of the arts – fine art, crafts and other means of self-expression – allow the people we serve to express themselves in ways that they often are unable to do with words,” said Peggy Cunningham, Arc Director of Services, Calaveras Campus. “Each piece of art is personal and as unique as the individual who created it.”
Works of art in photography, mixed media painting and collage, pencil sketches, watercolor, handmade jewelry and paper mache masks will be on display and available for purchase. “Our women’s group has recently begun creating individual masks as a means to express their emotions, some that are difficult to deal with,” added Cunningham. One woman in this program told us ‘I have a dark and a light side.’ During the process these artists are able to gain new insights and ways of positively dealing with conflicted feelings.”
“Members of our digital photography class have gone out on photo shoots throughout Calaveras and then head to the computer lab where they transfer their images and decided how they will use their best photos,” noted Cunningham. “Throughout the process, Arc consumers develop a wide range of skills – from critical thinking and decision making to computer technology.” One of our Arc classmates exclaimed, ‘I like taking pictures; it’s neat. I look at ‘em on the computer. I print it out; somebody might buy it.’”
Since 1971 The Arc of Amador and Calaveras has been recognized for its outstanding service to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At the Arc’s campus Programs individuals learn basic life and vocational skills and are exposed to a range of trainings to help them develop new interests. Community integration reinforces the skills learned within a classroom setting.
In addition, the Arc’s Supported Employment Program emphasizes individual placement opportunities in retail service, house cleaning, grocery stores and general labor. With Arc’s Supported Living Service encourages people to live in the situation of their choice while achieving personal growth. These services are not based on how skilled a person is, only on his or her desire to move onto the next step of their life.
