September is National Suicide Prevention Month

Tuolumne County, CA...September is National Suicide Prevention Month and local suicide prevention groups will be raising awareness through events and suicide prevention campaigns. On September 2nd, The Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors will be asked to make a proclamation recognizing September 8 – 14, 2014 as Suicide Prevention Week....

On September 25th, 2014 the Tuolumne County Suicide Prevention Task Force will hold the 5th Suicide Prevention Summit “Building Bridges to Hope” from 8am-1:30 pm at the Sonora Elks Lodge.

Promotion of “Know the Signs” will run through September– a joint campaign between Calaveras and Tuolumne County aims to increase the public’s knowledge about the signs of suicide and how to provide hope and reassurance for that may need help.

Using social technology to prevent suicide: the MY3 app - a smartphone application that provides suicide prevention support – will be promoted by local agencies. The mobile app helps designate a safety plan and a network of people that someone can reach and keep connected with when in need of support.

Mother Lode Survivors of Suicide Loss support group meets the 4th Tuesday of every month.

7,000 “Know the Signs” tent cards will be distributed in prescription bags in local pharmacies during the month of September. These cards will help family and friends identify signs to indicate someone they care about is having thoughts of suicide and provides information on local and national crisis lines.

Background
The YES Partnership is a community collaborative that supports local efforts in suicide prevention, substance abuse, and child abuse. . The YES Partnership partners with many local agencies to support efforts that raise awareness and encourage the community to act to address suicide.

Throughout the year, the YES Partnership collaborates with agencies such as the Tuolumne County Behavioral Health Department and Suicide Prevention Task Force to hold trainings and seminars that train community members to recognize the signs of someone contemplating suicide and how to get that person the help they need. Through September, we hope to bring attention to this issue and spread that message that it is preventable. Tuolumne County has the 4th highest rate per capita of suicide in all of California. These activities seek to
provide an opportunity for open dialogue and educate the community about risk factors, warning signs, and available resources and support for those struggling with suicide or loss.
