Oil Painting Workshop Offered At Petroglyphe
Mokelumne Hill, CA...Twelve lucky students can participate in a three-day art workshop, Oil Painting – A Direct Approach with Howard Rees, Aug. 15 through 17 at Petroglyphe Gallery, 8317 Main St., Mokelumne Hill in its adjacent Quarry Hill Studio. An artist’s reception, free and open to the public, will be held in his honor from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17 at the gallery featuring wine and light appetizers. The workshop, designed for “all comers” from beginner to advanced, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. all three days and will focus on the direct application of oil paint to produce fresh and spontaneous paintings. The first morning will begin with a demonstration about the essentials of Rees’ technique. Throughout the workshop participants will create their own works beginning each step with his guidance and direction....
“We will paint directly on the canvas,” relayed Rees. “We’ll utilize bold strokes with splash and spontaneity.”
A graduate of the Art Center of Design in Los Angeles, Rees was a designer for two major corporations – Ford Motor Company in England and Detroit, designing the iconic Mustang line from 1967 to 1969, and Mattel Toy Company in Los Angeles, where he was the second full-time designer of the original red line of Hot Wheels cars. He continues to attend Hot Wheel conventions throughout the Nation, where he can be found autographing Hot Wheel merchandise. “The solid basics from this training stuck with me through the years, and in 1975 I chose to focus my love of painting as a full-time artist,” he shared. Today he paints with equal proficiency in both watercolor and oil and loves the unique challenge each medium presents. His subjects extend to Americana, local Gold Country scenes, intimate European street studies and magnificent vistas.
As a watercolorist for 30 years, Rees later began to explore opaque mediums with oil painting. “Oils have the thickness to create a great deal of texture in a painting,” he said. “I learned how to manipulate it and enjoy piling up the color.”
Rees conducts fun-filled, informative workshops and Plein Air classes throughout the United States and Europe. In addition to his workshops, he has produced three instructional DVDs about painting with watercolor, painting from photographs and painting with oils. He resides in Jackson.
“We love hosting workshops with skilled artists where individuals can expand their skills and knowledge and have a great time doing it,” explained Denise Ebbett, gallery owner. “We invite everyone to attend our reception to view Rees’ work and have the opportunity to meet him face to face.
Cost for the three-day workshop is $295, and registration can be made by calling 286-1387.
Petroglyphe Gallery is open from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. For additional information on all upcoming artist’s classes and concerts, call or visit gallerypetroglyphe.com.
