The Late Summer Hit List ~ CVB Feature

Calaveras County, CA...There’s still so much more summer ahead of us, especially for those of you lucky enough not to have school – or jobs – on the calendar. Nevertheless, it’s still tough to fit in all the great summer activities that Calaveras has to offer, so we thought we’d offer up a little summer hit list of things we think should be on your radar over the next month.

Sierra Nevada Logging Jamboree

Be a Lumberjack for a Day

Logging Jamboree – We’ll go out on a limb here and say that you probably don’t often get the chance to throw axes and swing chainsaws for sport. But why not a little friendly competition among aspiring lumberjacks? Step up and unleash your inner woodsman (or woman) at the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum’s annual Jamboree. Amateurs are welcome to compete in the morning (if you’re the type to enter arm wrestling contests, this might be for you), beginning at 9am, then get out of the way for the pros, who start competing at noon. It’s a full day of history, food and entertainment celebrating the town’s rich timber industry past, plus you’ll get to browse their really cool collections of vintage logging equipment and scale models of mills and logging camps. After this, you’ll definitely nail those trivia questions about cross-cutting and hot-sawing.

WHEN: August 30, 9am – 5pm
WHERE: Sierra Nevada Logging Museum
2148 Dunbar Road, White Pines, CA 95223
CONTACT: 209-795-6782 | sierraloggingmuseum.org
COST: Free Admission

tandem zip at Moaning Cavern Adventure Park

Discover a New World Underground – Or Fly Above it

You may have heard Calaveras County has caves – actually, we have nearly half the show caves in the entire state, where you can suit up in coveralls and headlamps for an unforgettable adventure tour of the limestone netherworld at California Cavern, or take a more convenient walk through amazing geological displays at Mercer Cavern. Is it stalagmite or stalactite? Something to ponder as you rappel 165 feet into the abyss at Moaning Cavern! Or step out to the Moaning Cavern Adventure Park and harness up to their zip lines – which now offer tandem zips, so kids under 70 pounds can zip with an adult (pretty much the highlight of an 8 year old’s vacation).

WHEN: Any day, year round. Reservations required for wild caving expeditions only.Details:
