An opportunity to work: Community Support, How Local Businesses Support The Arc’s Work Crews
Amador County, Ca....Work crews at the Arc are paid group work opportunities in the community. All workers earn minimum wage and gain the skills needed to prepare them for individual job placements within the community. Crew members are held to a high standard. They must arrive to work on time, come dressed in crew attire, follow directions and follow safety rules and regulation set forth by each company we work for. In the past work crews use to use two vans and two trailers for recycling crews during the summer months. This year we purchased a 2004 Dodge Ram truck, eliminating the use of two vans down to one truck. This has been great for day programs as now they have the use of all their vans for classes and outings. Not only did the purchase of the truck increase the opportunity for campus outings in both Amador and Calaveras, but it saves the Arc money on a weekly basis. “We’re very proud of the new work crew truck,” said Director of Supported Employment Ileshia Knigge. “It bring cost saving strategy, keeps our day program vans clean, and consumers are very proud of it, it was a great decision and I’m happy our Executive Director and Board of Directors supported the purchase.”...
“It is always my desire and aspiration to continue to develop new relationships and to place work crews across both counties,” Ileshia Kingge, Director of Supported Employment said. “I see the value, both for the community and for the consumers, in having work crews placed with local businesses, it develops and fosters employment experience for people with disabilities so they can reach their personal goal of independent employment.”
“The Supported Employment Crew Leader, Sherry Shivley, is responsible for finding crew locations where The Arc can work. Sherry has proven to be a great job developer and since she started her position in October 2013, she has signed five new contracts with local businesses bringing more opportunities to the consumers” said Shawnna Molina, Executive Director. “It is team leadership and ownership like this that drives The Arc’s mission and direction.”
Thank you to our local businesses who continue to contract with The Arc supporting the work crew program: Amador County recycling, JB’s Awards & Engraving, Globe Hotel, Amador Community Foundation, New Melones, Century 21 Tri-Dam Reality in both Jackson and Angels Camp, Glass Dr., EBMUD, The Feed Barn, CDF in San Andreas, Caltrans in Angels Camp, Amador Chamber of Commerce, Mother Lode Investor, Lake Camanche both North and South, Thomi’s Café and Clark’s Corner.
