Paula Wenzl Bellacera (West Sacramento) masterfully recognizes that we share traits and emotions with our animal kin. By using them as subjects for her sculpture, they become delightful studies of us. Each of her figures has a personality of its own and through their quirky naturalness she presents the best of humanity. She has made for us a parliament of curious owls, a murder of petulant crows, a swarm of dancing bees and the most delightful herd of rabbits this side of the Centraql Valley. While most of the work is the expressive clay we fell in love with when we met Paula, we’re delighted to be introducing several works in bronze as well. No matter the material, Paula masterfully carves for us an opportunity to laugh at and love our differences and ourselves.

Liz Crain (Capitola, CA) employs the sleight of hand and eye in her trompe l’oeil cans and canisters. Each piece is a relic; old-timey and nostalgic, and tells a story of who, where and when. For Out of the Woods, Liz has created a series of as-if breweries and businesses hailing from the Sierra foothills and celebrating a party worthy homecoming to Amador County, her stomping ground in the 1980’s. Each of these imaginary bottlers must surely have peddled its hooch to miners to soothe the soot and sweat of 49er madness. We are delighted to stumble upon a cone top can, rusted and worn, bearing the name of Sutter Creek Brewery’s extra strong and BITTER brew. Pick it up. It’s clay! Fill these wonders with cream and serve coffee to your friends. This is pure delight.

Courtney Johnson (San Francisco, CA) paints portraits. Portraits of wacky characters, animal spirits and zany dreams. We got an e-mail from her back in January, responding to a shout out to her about our show. “I just watched some old Disney cartoons with ‘cute’animals and nature scenes and got some ideas. This sounds like fun!” The results? Yep. A must see. Courtney has gone through the dark side and back again with wildness personified. She’s studied up on Werner Herzog and his admiration and love for the overwhelming chaos of the universe and the unfinished nature of creation. Her subjects ponder the depths of existence, the transience of time and the fragility of life. They are our wonder and horror and delight.
