Community Support The Way It Should Be As Hundreds Turn Out To Support Deputy

San Andreas, CA...Hundreds turned out on Friday night to fill the San Andreas Town Hall for a benefit to support Calaveras County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Whiting who almost lost his life to the flu this year. The H1N1 Virus attacked his respiratory system and he spent 12 days in a coma and is still suffering from his battle. He and his family were present for the event and were overwhelmed and humbled by the support at the event. In may ways the event exemplified what we see happen in this community everyday. We have always been amazed at the generosity of our communities. Friday night was Calaveras County at it's finest...

What follows was what was written about his ordeal a few weeks ago.

Early February Deputy Jeff Whiting (a healthy 41 year old father and husband) with the Calaveras County Sheriff Department became very ill and was hospitalized via ambulance to Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas. He experienced complete respiratory failure and had to be air lifted to Sutter Memorial in Sacramento. It was determined by doctors that Jeff was suffering from the H1N1 virus and and double pneumonia. He was intubated, and in a medically induced coma for 12 days, and spent almost three weeks in the hospital gravely ill. Jeff's wife Rachelle (also with the Sheriff's Department) never left his side and was determined to see him healthy again. Both of them were missing work.

After many scary moments Jeff regained consciousness and has been slowly making progress. Their daughter Abby is very relieved to know her dad is on the mend, as is the rest of the family. We are holding a chicken in a barrel fundraiser to help this great family with medical and other expenses while Jeff heals.

Jeff and Rachelle are amazing and strong people who serve our community everyday, put themselves in harms way to keep us safe and would do anything for our county. Please join us as we give thanks for their service and help them in their time of need. We have set up this go fund me site for anyone who can not make the dinner but would still like to help out.

Our family sincerely appreciates everyone who has prayed for Jeff, sent positive thoughts and offered to help out. It truly shows what a great community we live in.

Everyone Please Get Your Flu Shots!
