Cruising Panama's Canal, savoring 5,000 nautical miles and 500,000 decadent calories
Murphys, CA ... Al and Sunny Lockwood will launch their book "Cruising Panama's Canal, savoring 5,000 nautical miles and 500,000 decadent calories" Sunday, March 23, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Gold Country Roasters located at 78 Scott St. Suite A, in Murphys. They'll sign and sell books, and share travel stories. A serious car crash threatened Al and Sunny Lockwood's lives, but instead it led them to the trip of a lifetime, and that trip led to their new, highly-acclaimed book. Their 264-page paperback traces the journey day-by-day, giving readers an intimate glimpse of ocean cruising and a detailed description of transiting the Panama Canal from the Pacific to the Atlantic. A top Amazon reviewer, Jay Mittener, says, "The book is full of all the fun stuff .... Food, entertainment, ins and outs of ship life and, most of all, just a gracious spirit of a couple who loves to travel."
Sunny, formerly a reporter for the Sonora Union Democrat, says the accident made them realize how quickly life or health can be snatched away. They decided to do some of the things they'd always dreamed about. First on the list: cruise through the Panama Canal.
"A texting driver slammed full-speed into us and another vehicle as we sat waiting at a red light. The crash totaled all three cars," says Al, a photographer and general contractor who worked for years in Calaveras County. "It's amazing no one was killed. But we were pretty banged up. We wanted to turn something really bad into something really good," Al says. "Making a dream come true seemed like a perfect way to do that. The book just grew out of all the fun and crazy things that happened during our cruise."
"Cruising Panama's Canal, savoring 5,000 nautical miles and 500,000 decadent calories" is available in both ebook and paperback editions at Amazon.com
