Call it Recycled, Reclaimed or Reused... You Can Just Call it Home

Calaveras County, CA...Everyone has had dreams about remodeling a part of their home at one point or another. Maybe you're tired of making dinner in your tiny kitchen. Perhaps you've stubbed your toe again on the cabinet after getting out of the shower and you're sick of it? Or, maybe, you just really want to make some upgrades. But, the thought of the cost of it all has you stopped in your tracks, doesn't it? Don't let that keep you from having the home you've always wanted! You could save a ton of money by using recycled or reclaimed building materials. Enclosed are a few organizations to check out.

  • The ReUse People of America - This Oakland, California based company started out as a part of a flood relief drive in 1993. They quickly realized the need for low cost/reclaimed building materials. They coordinate deconstruction projects to ensure they have quality products to resell and ultimately avoid already overfilled landfills.
  • Habitat for Humanity - Habitat's ReStore is a discount home improvement store that sells quality new and used products at discounted prices. Most of the items they sell are donated and all of the proceeds go towards funding the construction of new homes for needy families.
  • The ReBuilding Center - A project of Our United Villages, the ReBuilding Center provides resources that make home repairs affordable to everyone, with the goal of promoting the reuse of salvaged and reclaimed materials. Three hundred visitors come to The ReBuilding Center every day to browse the ever-changing inventory that includes sinks, tubs, tile, lumber, doors, windows, trim and much more.
  • EcoBuilding Bargains - This organization accepts donations of quality, but unwanted, home improvement materials and sells them to the public at low prices in a convenient retail setting. Their inventory includes used and salvaged building materials, and surplus stock from the building industry.
Not only will you be saving money on your home improvement project by choosing previously used building materials, you'll be keeping these items from ending up in our over crowded landfills. You could also stumble upon some really cool vintage pieces, without spending the kind of money you would at an antique store.
