JAZZTRAX 2014 WRAP UP
Bear Valley, CA..It was a beautiful sunny day at Bear Valley Cross Country where the 8th Annual JAZZTRAX SNOWSHOE STOMP was held. There were 45 racers at the start line, ages ranging from 3 to 86! Very exciting. The event was forwarded with the race director, Patty Jo Struve, playing the national anthem on the trumpet. As Paul Peterson, BVXC owner, explained the course set-up, racers were listening carefully to make sure they would not take any wrong turns....

The one mile had 7 participants and the highlight of this race was 3 year old Solay Sommersett sprinting for the finish line. So adorable!
The 5K was the largest group with 30 racers and walkers. Vicky Brae-Johnson won this race outright after claiming she “out of shape.” She is just a gifted athlete and deserved this win. She was the returning women’s champion in the 5K. Mark Shepherd was soon thereafter, winning the male division in the 5K. Atticus Cummings was the youngest competitor in the 5K and did a fine job racing his first snowshoe event. Ken Nash was the oldest, 86 years young, and he raced with a broken collar bone!
The 10k was the most competitive race with 9 serious racers. Returning participants were the victors this year. Jason Reed and Josette Sommersett took home the honors of top male and female. Reed has been a part of this event for 7 years and always makes a great showing at this race and many other ultra running events throughout the country. The youngest male 10k racer, Joseph Renati, 14, did a fine job in his first snowshoe race as well. Congratulations to all finishers!
After the race, participants were entertained and fed great food at the Sky High Pizza place in Bear Valley village. Several returning racers were found saying “this is my favorite part of the whole day!”
Music was provided by two junior high groups that race director, Struve has been teaching this past year. The music was excellent, featuring NCA JAZZ and ELEMENT 116, kids from Livermore and Walnut Creek. These kids had one rehearsal to prepare for the event and came together making super music and new friends. Food was prepared by Paula Gonzalez, local caterer and former band mom who gave her service with a smile and a hug. Raffle prizes from local businesses and awards were presented to EVERY racer!
Without the following people and organizations, this event would not have been the success it was in 2014! Many thanks to our friends and sponsors:
