Mark Twain Medical Center Awards $26,000 in Community Grants to Non Profit Organizations
San Andreas, CA...Yesterday Mark Twain Medical Center continued their tradition of helping in the community. They held their Annual Awards Luncheon at the hospital where the 6 organizations were chosen to receive grants from a total of 19 who applied. The awardees are: Arc of Amador and Calaveras – (provides support and services to persons with developmental disabilities to encourage mainstream life, work, learning and recreation). Disability Resource Agency for Independent (supports the independence of individuals with disabilities through resources, advocacy and services). Ebbetts Pass Firefighters Association (CPR classes and AED education for community). San Andreas Community Covenant Church (to provide free community meals every Wednesday). Resource Connection - Food Bank (serves 2,523 families-accounting for 17% of the population of Calaveras County). The Volunteer Center (mileage reimbursement to volunteers that provide transportation to vulnerable citizens)...

In FY2013, there were over 44,109 person-visits that benefited from Mark Twain Medical Center's community programs. Some of the local highlights included a total community benefit expenditure of over $38 million. Quantifiable benefits included over $7M in benefits to vulnerable populations, $371,470 for the broader community, traditional charity care, unpaid costs of Medi-cal and Medicare, community service donations, community health services and education, and community building activities.
This year Dignity Health system wide had a total of 391 requests for funding, totaling over $16m. The total of recommendations was 237 with a total of $6,022,487 in funding requested and $4,646,949 awarded. By far, the largest category was access to medical and dental health, with Chronic Disease Management a distant second. At the local level, MTMC had 19 organizations who requested funding; with a grand total of $140,141. Of these, 6 organizations were asked to submit final proposals, and all six submitted proposals totaling $40,040.60.
Additional community benefit programs from MTMC include Health Fairs held at the hospital in September, Ironstone Vineyards in March and Valley Springs in June. These health fairs provided free flu shots and health screenings and over 50 health-related organizations participated as our partners.
At the County Fair, they provided First Aid coverage 24 hours a day and supported the Fair with both volunteer hours and dollars. Their Long Term Improvement Projects for chronic disease diabetes management are designed to keep patients out of the hospital through education, physical exercise and nutrition.
These community benefit projects have had great results in decreasing readmissions and providing patients with healthier lifestyles. Other projects such as Pink in the Night, community Disaster Preparedness, Take Women to Heart partnership with the Soroptimist International of Calaveras County provides free comprehensive cholesterol tests to all Calaveras County women, Medication vouchers and sponsorships all contribute to building a healthy community.
