Spellman Passed Over For Board Chair...Supervisor Ponte is 2014 Chair & Supervisor Edson is Vice Chair

San Andreas, CA...In a breach of normal tradition, Supervisor Darren Spellman, the 2013 Vice-Chair was passed over for ascension to the 2014 Board Chair position. Edson, Wright & Ponte elevated Supervisor Ponte to the position as the 2014 Board Chair, while Supervisor Merita Callaway voted against and Spellman abstained. Today's meeting had some awkward moments before the eventual outcome. With this drama filled start, and 2014 being an election year for two seats on the board the Board Chambers will no doubt become the center of the county's attention once again as the year progresses. Throw in budget problems and odds are some of the 2014 meetings may be local, political theater at a very intense level. The games have commenced...

If that isn't a vote of no confidence against Spellman I don't know what is! To have three of your fellow board members think you're not capable to steer the county's sinking ship is huge commentary against you.

I hope Spellman's challengers use this in their upcoming campaigns.

Supervisor Edson who nominated Ponte cited her years of experience as the Mayor of Angels Camp as a reason for his nomination.

That is a logical thought process and his honest opinion about who he thought would be best given the circumstances.

The bitter band of Spellman haters will always try to politically spin the dream they hope for but their schemes will be crushed by the voters on Election Day once again.

Hate never champions over compassion and caring.

    God bless.

What are you smoking? Unless Spellman can see a personal benefit, show me where he has ever cared about, or had compassion about anything. Just look at his history. It is refreshing that the other supervisors have apparently observed what three school districts saw when they did not keep him employed beyond his one year probation period.....the guy is constantly disruptive and he simply is not capable of telling the truth. Bravo to the Calaveras Board!

Thanks for the funny commentary, truthfully.

Things worked so well this year with the board achieving some notable accomplishments like the county noise ordinance, short term rental agreement, replacing deputies on the Sheriffs staff, hiring a new CAO and many more.

I guess as fun as honeymoons are they must come to an end sometime.

It actually takes a lot of pressure off of me in a campaign year and I was vocal that I had an issue with the extra $12,000 per year stipend for the Board Chair position that I now won't have to try to explain to voters.

You are correct in saying though that it is abnormal and even though I disagreed with the three new supervisors predecessors I never denied them my vote for chair of the board as I feel disagreements are healthy.

I can see already that the political sharks are ready to bloody the waters, but I would caution that discontent in an extremely difficult budget year coupled with an election year could lead to very poor outcomes for many innocent bystanders, our neighbors and friends who don't deserve to bear the financial cost of political gamesmanship by a few weak minded troublemakers.

May we rise above, for the sake of our fellow friends and neighbors who just want honesty and transparency is my hope.

Sincerely, Darren Spellman

So now you are threatening us Spellman? What, if we choose to not elect you to office you will cut our departments? Are you saying county employees need to support you or else?? Your second to the last paragraph sure sounds like a threat to those who won't support you.

So let me get this straight, a Superior court judge told you two years ago to quit intimidating people with your title. He said you needed to stop throwing your weight around. Basically stop being a bully.

So you ignore a judge's warning now and threaten people of "very poor outcomes for many innocent bystanders, our neighbors and friends who don't deserve to bear the financial cost of political gamesmanship".

You really are a piece of work. Can't wait to give my money and vote to one of your challengers.

So basically you are saying it is ok for your neighbors and friends to be dragged through the mud and their reputation tarnished whether or not the lies Spellman (or any other politician) says are true or not.

        Yes you are heartless.

Arnold businesses are gone because of a lack of people supporting them, which was caused by the economy. Without tourist money Arnold cannot thrive and when the economy started to go down, the tourists stopped buying cabins and spending their money in Arnold.

One could say that President Clinton, President George W Bush and most recently President Barack Obama were the most hated men in America in their respective reelection years but guess what?

They all got reelected because they came closer to the center and represented a greater number of people.

Same is true for Spellman, as noted by his working relationship with Supervisor Callaway and the rest of the board for that matter.

          1) The posts are self-serving messages, only about you.
          2) The posts are full of lies.

You are a clinical example of a narcissist.

I feel sorry for your Morman friends who helped vote you in to office. They are been embarrassed by your behavior and have had their own friends wonder why they supported you. They really have no reason to support you after showing your true un-Christian like behavior toward people.

I believe that the BOS may actually be complicit in in securing Mr. Spellman's future by passing him over as chair. If I were a board member I would just follow protocol and enjoy watching the narcissist make a fool of himself. That being said I certainly hope that District 5

Les, the BOS actually set a precedent. Never before has a vice-chairs ascension to Chair been taken away. Mr. Spellman's predecessor's ascension was challenged by the existing BOS at that time. Mr. Thomas was able to prevail, to become the chairman.
Mr. Spellman has his quirks, but, he should have been given the position of chairman. The rest of them are no better than Mr. Spellman. If you think so, watch the bos video. Spanking went on during the meeting. If you folks care to watch, the bos site has it or try Calaveras Planning Coalition website.
One important issue goes with being chairman. Being on time.
Good luck to you Mr. Spellman. This will be interesting elections for the two districts. Mr. Spellman, when Mr. Edson gives you advice, remind him he had help to beat Tofanelli. Without the help he would have lost in the primary. Next time he may not be so lucky.
The GAMES have begun! Don't forget to vote!

Sounds like a paranoid personality speaking about a Christian reality in Darren Spellman.

Spellman is so out of touch and arrogant that he went ahead and bought a new car because he was so certain that he was going to be appointed as Chairperson.

I don't think many of those who support Darren are out of touch with reality. They are either close friends or relatives and they are too close to see his self-serving personality. The others who support him have been brainwashed, for lack of a better word, by his slick, conservative outfits perfectly coiffed hair and his attendance at church functions.

He may profess to be a Morman, but the Mormans I know actually are honest, genuine people who truly care about others and their community. All Spellman has shown is immature outbursts, accusatory rather than collaborative behavior and he holds personal, lying vendettas against those who challenge him.

How is that Christian behavior? How is that leadership? We need a new supervisor. Spellman's farce is over.

Spellman is only connected to CCWD as much as his inlaws pay his water bill since he rents a house from them. He's not even economically invested in District 5 let alone Calaveras County. I don't think he is mentally invested either. Anywhere.

Go away Spellman or start signing your name. Everyone can see through you. You're a fairly shallow person.

Voters need to be reminded that Spellman tried to run for a congressional seat shortly after he was elected supervisor. This man was ready to ditch District 5 voters and not give them a second thought. Can you say, "God-like complex"????

If you are a flat lander why are you involved in Calaveras County politics? You don't live here. You don't have a vested interest in this election. Oh, wait. You're probably a friend or family member of Spellman. What a lovely representation of him you are!

I don't need a county supervisor who is supported by foul-mouth, out-of-county people. Thank you for giving me another reason to vote against Spellman.
