BLACK SHEEP WINERY

We are located in the Gold Rush town of Murphys, California in Calaveras County in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Murphys, with its historic, tree-lined Main Street is a 2 1/2 hour drive east from most locations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Black Sheep Winery opened in 1984, featuring small releases of wine handcrafted from high quality grapes grown in Calaveras, and Amador Counties. We produce about 2,500 cases of wine per year, specializing in Zinfandels, but also producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and a second label we call True Frogs Lily Pad Wines. This wine pays homage to our jumping frog heritage here in Calaveras County!

Wine making came to this region with the gold-seeking 49ers. Many of them were immigrants who brought grape cuttings from the old country as well as wine making knowledge. Soon there were many acres of grapes grown and much wine produced. After the gold ran out and the population dwindled, most of the vineyards died.

The last two decades have seen a rebirth of wine making in Calaveras County. New vineyards are being established. There are currently 25 wineries in the county. With excellent soil and climate conditions, this region is becoming more and more popular as an uncrowded, enjoyable wine tasting destination.

We invite you to visit our Tasting Room and taste our award-winning wines. If you can't visit in person just yet, please see our current releases, and online order form.
