Calaveras Visitors Bureau Recognizes the County’s Top Innovators in the Tourism Industry

Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras Visitors Bureau (CVB) revealed the 2013 Innovations in Tourism Award-winners at its annual dinner, which was held Tuesday, October 29 at CAMPS Restaurant at Greenhorn Creek. Each year, the CVB recognizes an outstanding business that has gone above and beyond to attract visitors to Calaveras through new or unique ideas, products or services. To encourage more innovation throughout the county, this year the CVB expanded its Innovations in Tourism Awards to recognize multiple businesses from various sectors of the tourism industry...

CVB Board President Stephen Kautz and Assemblyman Frank Bigelow with Wendi and Bruce Davison from Arnold Black Bear Inn, the winners of last night's lodging category, as well as the Most Innovative Business of the Year award.

New this year, the CVB also asked their members to help decide the winners by asking them to vote for the businesses they thought were most inventive in the following categories—attractions, events, lodging, recreation, dining and shopping.

The business that received the most votes in each sector was awarded an Innovations in Tourism Award and also received special recognition from Senator Tom Berryhill, and Assemblyman Frank Bigelow who was on hand at the event to present each winner with a joint Assembly Certificate. who was on hand at the event to present Assembly to each winner as an added honor. Additionally, the business that received the most votes overall, also received the “Most Innovative Business” of the year award from the CVB.

Bruce and Wendi Davison of Arnold Black Bear Inn took home the Innovations in Tourism Award for lodging, along with the evening’s top honor, “Most Innovative Business” of the year, for their development as a premiere wedding destination and their new Top Chef Challenge event packages. The winners in the other categories included:

EVENTS – Twisted Oak Winery, for bringing a new venue to Calaveras’ evening entertainment scene with its Summer Concert Series.

ATTRACTION – Calaveras Big Trees State Park, for their interpretive programs, warming hut and new visitor center.

RESTAURANT – Sidewinders / Doke Sushi, for filling a culinary niche, offering live music, staying open late and being dependably high quality.

RETAIL – Stories in Stones, for their unique retail experience and educational outreach.

RECREATION – Arnold Rim Trail Association, for the planning and development of the Arnold Rim Trail and map.

“The annual Innovations in Tourism Awards are a way for the CVB to highlight our outstanding members who are making Calaveras a must-visit destination,” said Lisa Boulton, Executive Director of the Calaveras Visitors Bureau. “If this year’s winners inspire just one other local business or organization to develop a new program, event or initiative that has the potential to attract more visitors to the area, then that’s a positive impact for the whole county.”
