Prescribed Burn on the Stanislaus National Forest
Sonora, Calif., (October 29, 2013) The Stanislaus National Forest is preparing to implement several prescribed fire treatments to reduce hazardous fuels, improve habitat, and stimulate new growth. Prescribed Fire, also known as a controlled burn, refers to the controlled application of fire by a team of fire experts under specified weather conditions that help restore forest health to fire-adapted environments....
Prescribed fire is one of the most effective and cost efficient tools for maintaining and restoring forest and scrublands all across the forest. These treatments help reduce excessive amounts of brush, shrubs, trees, and reduce the risk of unwanted catastrophic wildfires. Prescribed burning can also help maintain vital fuel breaks to slow or halt the spread of wildfire, is an excellent follow-up to other treatments like thinning and mastication, and can reintroduce fire into ecosystems where fire has largely been eliminated.
Forest fire managers design prescribed fire implementation plans to determine the optimum time and place to implement each burn. The smoke emissions for all prescribed burning on the Stanislaus National Forest is approved by the California Air Resources Board prior to implementation.
Smoke emissions may be visible in the vicinity of the fire, but is monitored and controlled at all times by fire personnel.
