Hazel Fischer Third-graders Receive Personal Dictionaries

Arnold, CA....Today the Arnold Rotarians watched the smiles light up as they distributed personal dictionaries to third grade students at Hazel Fischer Elementary School in Arnold. Teacher Carol Hart has already introduced her students to such dictionary skills as using guide words and entry words, and understanding multiple meanings. Mrs. Hart will lead her students in a deeper exploration of the world of language, building their literacy in both print and digital media as the school year continues...

At the end of the school year, the students will take their dictionaries home where they and their families will use them for many years to come. Arnold Rotary worked with the staff at Hazel Fischer to choose a hard-cover school and office dictionary that will serve them and their families through high school and beyond. The Rotary Club is grateful to the Vallecito Union School District for matching Rotary’s donation for this year’s books.

Even in the digital age, print editions of dictionaries are highly valued in the Arnold community. Arnold librarian Fran Devlin knows a major reason all too well: “While increasing numbers of families in Arnold have acquired computers, many can’t afford Internet access. The library’s dictionaries are in constant high demand,” says Fran. “It’s good to know that every student through the 8th grade in the Arnold area now has a dictionary for home use because of Rotary’s program.”

This is the sixth successive year that the club has provided personal dictionaries to every third grader at Hazel Fischer School. Arnold Rotarian Dave Webb, a participant in the program since 2008, likes to start Distribution Day off by asking the students to look up the words “community” and “service,” so that he can explain what Rotary International is all about. This activity generally occurs just after the students have spontaneously done what anyone would do: looked up their own names. Says Dave of his long-time favorite project, “It’s a real kick to see how excited the kids are.”
