October 2 Town Hall Meeting to Focus On Future Plans For Murphys Community Club

Murphys, CA...Future plans for the Murphys Community Club (MCC), built on the successes of the past, will be presented and discussed when the club hosts an open-to-everyone town hall meeting Tuesday, October 2, 7 p.m. in the Native Daughters Hall, 268 Main St. As MCC enters its sixtieth year of community involvement, we want to build on the enthusiasm and accomplishments of 2007,” states club president Michal Houston...

“We have many challenges and opportunities facing us in 2008, including the club’s involvement in the county’s pursuit of a general plan, and we want all the people of the Murphys area to have the chance to give their input and to be totally involved.”

The Murphys Community Club was established in 1948 and has as its major
responsibility the care and supervision of the creekside Murphys Community Park, recognized as one of the area’s major treasures. It is the scene of many public and private events and provides a tranquil gathering place for families, friends, and neighbors.

In the past year the park has benefited from many improvements including
refurbishing the gazebo, resodding of the grassy areas, improving the lighting, and the purchase of a sound system. Paths have been enhanced and attractive rocks placed in strategic areas.

During the past several months, MCC has hosted a number of successful events. Among these was the inauguration of First Fridays in the Park, a four-month summer series featuring music accompanied by food, beverages, and social interaction. A concert by the Air National Guard of the West Coast Band was very well received. The time-honored Murphys Homecoming was restructured and a Promenade to the Park introduced. Quarterly Town Hall Meetings, held in the Native Daughters Hall, covered a variety of topics. There was also a Vacation Cottage Tour.

It was also a year when club membership doubled and the county took a more
active part in park maintenance.

“We have a number of projects waiting to be done,” says Houston. “We want to install shade covers over the children’s play area to make summer use safer and more enjoyable. There is much interest in creating bocce ball courts. A veterans’ memorial is in the concept stage. And eventually we hope to extend the park and make improvements to its entrance.”

Houston stressed that all these projects will require increased community
involvement. Money needs to be raised and supervising committees formed. MCC is an all-volunteer organization depending on dedicated and hard working people whose reward is making a major contribution to their neighborhood.
The emphasis of the October 2 meeting is to discuss these projects and encourage community involvement. The format will also provide for an evaluation of the club events and solicit comments from those in attendance.

A major agenda item will be consideration of what role, if any, the club will play as Calaveras County prepares its General Plan and any future Murphys Community Plan revisions.

JoAnna Reagan, a member of the Community Club board, will moderate the
evening. The event is open to club members and non-members alike. There is no admission charge.
