STABAT MATER OF PERGOLESI

Lisa Lawson, soprano; Kim LaSavio, alto; Michael Lawson, baroque cello and theorbo; and Dr. Faythe Volrath, baroque organ and harpsichord.

Introducing a new sacred music project at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church! Formation of Carmina Sacra (Sacred Songs) will be an exciting opportunity to prepare and perform sacred musical works in the beautiful setting of the new church sanctuary in Martell. Members of this auditioned group will sing and play at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass at St. Katharine Drexel Church as well as preparing music for special feast days of the Church.

Carmina Sacra Director Kim LaSavio will guide the first performance of a small vocal and instrumental ensemble on September 15 at 3:00 p.m. The music for this recital will include the Stabat Mater by Giovanni Pergolesi. This stunning piece of baroque music was written for two women's voice parts and a small ensemble of instruments, setting the traditional poetic lyrics of the Stabat Mater Dolorosa (The Sorrowful Mother Stood) in a new way - for the 18th century, that is! Often performed for the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (September 15 on the church calendar) the Pergolesi Stabat Mater has stood the test of time and continues to be a favorite setting of this liturgical poetry.

Performers for this event will include Lisa Lawson, soprano; Kim LaSavio, alto; Michael Lawson, baroque cello and theorbo; and Dr. Faythe Volrath, baroque organ and harpsichord. The Lawsons are familiar faces in the baroque scene in Sacramento and beyond, being the founders and directors of the Sacramento Baroque Soloists. Residents of Amador County, Michael and Lisa also maintain an active teaching studio in cello and violin. Dr. Faythe Volrath is an alumnus of Sacramento State and received her doctoral degree in harpsichord recently in New York. She has returned home to Placerville, and we are very fortunate to have her performing here with us.

While the event is free, a free-will offering will be used to support the music ministry at St. Katharine Drexel Church. Light refreshments will follow in the church's Hospitality Room.

Anyone interested in auditioning for Carmina Sacra should contact Kim LaSavio at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, (209)223-2970, ext. 220. St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church is located at 11361 Prospect Drive, Jackson, California 95642.
