Updated...Mother and Son Perish in Early Morning Structure Fire ~From Central Fire Chief Jeff Stone

Mountain Ranch, CA...(In a sad update.,,Barbara Grizzel, 86, and her son Harry Hanssen, 66, of Arroyo Grande passed away in the fire. It is most likely that the son perished trying to save his mother). Just after 1am this morning fire engines responded to a reported structure fire in the 8,000 Block of Mountain Meadows Drive. CalFire E3559 initially arrived on scene and reported a partially involved structure and possibly 2 occupants inside the structure. E3559 initiated a rescue attempt and entered the building but was unable to locate any occupants and was forced out of the building by heavy fire conditions. As additional fire apparatus arrived on scene, the fire spreading to the nearby vegetation was extinguished and the fire in the structure was also extinguished. The residence incurred extensive damage...

The subsequent investigation determined that two adult males had escaped from the fire. An adult female and adult male were unable to escape and perished in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
