Daughters of the American Revolution - Essay Contest!

Amador & Calaveras Counties, CA... WANTED – 9th Grade to 12th Grade Students

The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution is once again joining efforts with the National Italian American Foundation to sponsor a national essay contest on Christopher Columbus. The contest is open to all students in grades 9 through 12 in public, private or parochial schools or those who are home schooled. This contest is conducted without regard to race, sex or national origin. There are monetary prizes for our local Chapter’s winning essay as well as first, second and third places should the student’s work progress through the steps to the national level. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see an Amador or Calaveras County student reach such heights? ...

The 2013-2014 essay contest asks the student to write an 800 to 1200 word essay entitled:
“How Do Americans View Christopher Columbus and George Washington Today?”

Essay topic states: Both of these men are considered heroes from whose lives American can draw beneficial lessons. Discuss the similarities and differences between the ways in which Christopher Columbus and George Washington dealt with and overcame the challenges and adversities they faced. What can Americans apply to their own lives from the experiences of these men?

The Sierra Amador Chapter, NSDAR is hopeful that many students throughout Amador and Calaveras Counties will participate in the contest. The NSDAR bases judging of submitted essays on historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness. Additions such as pictures, maps, drawing, graphics, and other such additions will not be considered in judging and should not be included. A suggested reading list and additional judging criteria is available upon request.

Essays for all participants need to be to the Sierra Amador Chapter contact no later than Friday, November 1, 2013. The Sierra Amador Chapter, NSDAR proudly looks forward to acknowledging the efforts of all students who take part in the contest. In January we will hold a formal tea to honor all participants for their efforts and to present an award to the winner from our area. Parents are invited to attend. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Sierra Amador Chapter.
