Plymouth Sparkles!

Plymouth, CA...The Plymouth Economic Development (PED) had a big month in June. Outline lighting was installed on buildings along Main Street in Old Town Plymouth as part of Plymouth Sparkles!, a campaign of civic pride and participation....

Carol Hayward also coordinated a Curb Appeal Contest for residents of Plymouth that improved the looks of their homes on the street side. Five retailers offered discounts to those who registered to participate in the contest. This included Plymouth/Shenandoah True Value Hardware, Habitat for Humanity, Amador Flower Farm and Claypool’s.

The winners, in order of placement, were: Sarah Zulim, Rick & Loretta Cunha, Greg Baldwin, Kevin & Wendy Cranford, Grace Gunter, Sakae Roberson, Terrell Jenkins, Diane Davis, Steve & Elizabeth Pinotti Bryan Thorwton, Peter Amoruso, Demetrius Alexander and Dina & Eric Athey.

The planners had not expected such a high number of entries. Carol Hayward stated “We figured that even five entries would be great, so we really consider this a very successful first year.” The Judges included Lin Sanders, Diedre Muller, Jennifer Amoruso, Kevin Hayward, Donna Brune and Pat Shackleton.

Prizes were donated by Amador 360/The Barbera Festival, Plymouth/Shenandoah True Value Hardware, the Amador County Fair, Renwood Winery, the Amador Flower Farm and Wells Fargo Bank.

PED Director Rick Sanders was thrilled “People think that Plymouth is kind of pokey and that it is difficult to get things going here, but with the unanimous support of the City Council and all the other donors and participants, this grew legs of its own. A few years ago the PED gave a Certificate of Appreciate to Gary Colburn for the great work he did to his family Victorian home. With the amount of work and money Gary put in that restoration, he deserved to be acknowledged. The Curb Appeal contest is an outgrowth of that appreciation effort.”

This year the PED is giving special Certificates of Appreciation to Jennifer Amoruso, Peter Garibaldi, and Carol Hayward. Jennifer will receive hers for the spectacular restoration of the Burke Home on Main Street. It was a labor of love and work of art, all at the same time. Peter did considerable clean-up on his properties on the Plymouth Highway corridor and Carol completely restored a vacation rental cottage, “The Twisted Cork” on Mineral Street, just four doors south of Taste Restaurant.

Plymouth Mayor, Sandy Kyles, stated “Our Council was proud to participate with Reeder Sutherland, Vino Noceto Winery, Amador County, Helwig Winery, Integrity Design & Marketing, the Amador County Fair, Restaurant Taste and the Rotary Club of Plymouth – Foothills in the major funding of the downtown lights – the lights are stunning and our residents love them. It really makes a difference between a dark downtown and an inviting downtown.” Currently, the lights are on at dusk and off 4 hours later.

The lighting was in place for the June Plymouth Sparkles Celebration, a free dinner attended by over 80 residents and with Music by The Outdoor Cats. The lighting also provided a surreal background to Plymouth’s Family 4th of July Celebration, with fireworks by over 100 families.

“This is what Plymouth is doing to become attractive to families and business. We want visitors and jobs and we are getting a great outpouring of support. Plymouth area citizens are building a base that is attractive and with it. You can see what we are doing on the PED website at www.PlyEconDev.com . This really is exciting!” Jeff Gardner, Plymouth City Manager, stated.

The PED is continuing to raise funds for extending the lighting and other visual improvement projects. The PED meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each odd month, at Amador Vintage Market, 9393 Main Street at 8:45AM. Visitors and volunteers are always welcome!
