Tuolumne County Sheriff's Releases on Jon Flaherty Murder.... San Andreas Residents in Custody for Murder in Murderer’s Gulch

We just reaceived this press release from the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office regarding the suspected homicide victim. The body has apparently been recovered. The full release is enclosed....

**UPDATE #2**

Event: Suspected Homicide Victim’s Body Recovered

Date/Time of Release: August 28, 2007/1559 Hours

Summary:

Early this afternoon, cadaver dogs led detectives to the concealed body of an as yet unidentified male in the general vicinity of where the truck described below was found. This afternoon, search and rescue workers as well as sheriff’s detectives descended into the dry gulch area of Deer Creek and recovered the body.

Detectives will work into the night attempting to put the pieces together as to what happened, how, and who all was involved. A forensic autopsy is being scheduled for later this week.

Both Stantons remain in custody. Their arraignment is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.

Event: Additional Arrest Made in Shooting Case; Vehicle Recovered

Suspect #2: Stanton, Shawna Lea, FW, 31, 5-8/250, Brn/Hzl; address:

100 Blk E. Columbia Way, Sonora

Charge: PC 32, Accessory

Date/Time of Release: August 28, 2007/0809 Hours

Summary:

Yesterday, Detectives working on this case had the involved vehicle pulled from the canyon known as Murderer’s Gulch. It is a red and white Ford Ranger Pickup registered to Uta Christina Flaherty from San Andreas. This was the vehicle that had been in the possession of Jon Flaherty prior to the incident in question. The vehicle is being further processed for evidence.

Yesterday afternoon, Detectives arrested the sister of the other suspect (David Stanton). She is Shawna Stanton from Sonora. She is being charged for assisting the suspect after the initial crime. This is a felony charge. She is being held in custody at the Tuolumne County Jail with a $10,000 bail. No details as to the events leading to this arrest are available for release.

We have still not located Jon Flaherty.

Today, cadaver dogs will be searching different areas in an attempt to track the location of the apparent victim in this case.

This investigation is ongoing. More details will be released as the investigation allows.

**INITIAL PRESS RELEASE**

Event: Shooting Leads to Arrest, Mystery

Suspect: Stanton, David Roy, MW, 39, 5-10/220 Brn/Brn, address:

1000 block O’Connell Dr., San Andreas

Charges: Murder

Status: In Custody; Bail: $1 Million

Location: Wards Ferry near Old Wards Ferry Rd., Sonora

Date of Incident: August 25, 2007

Date of Press Release: August 27, 2007

SUMMARY

On 8-25 at 1800 hours deputies were dispatched to the above area reference a woman screaming and a person possibly being shot. Deputies arrived, found signs of a struggle, but no victim/s or suspect/s.

During the investigation they learned a particular vehicle was involved in the incident. They learned a victim may have been placed in this vehicle before it was driven away. Efforts to locate the vehicle and the persons involved in the incident continued into the night.

Early the next morning, Sunday, deputies were told of a vehicle over the embankment in the Deer Creek area south of the Wards Ferry Bridge. It turned out this was the vehicle we had been looking for connected to the possible shooting incident. The vehicle was several hundred feet over the embankment in an area known as Murderer’s Gulch.

Detectives and search and rescue volunteers scoured the area and found no one at or near the vehicle.

Late yesterday afternoon, deputies located David Stanton and arrested him for his alleged involvement in this shooting.

There is a person outstanding who we believe was involved, possibly as a victim or a witness. This person of interest is Jon Steven Flaherty, 29, from Wallace California. He is described as being a white male, 5-9/180, brown hair, green eyes.
