Local WIC Agency Awards (Amador & Calaveras)

Sutter Creek, CA... The Resource Connection of Amador and Calaveras County’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program has received the 2013 Best Practices Award for Excellence in Participant Centered Education from the California Department of Public Health State WIC program. Presented at the California WIC Association Conference on April 23, 2013 in San Jose, CA, the award acknowledges agencies that have “gone above and beyond that which is expected, and have implemented best practices” in providing nutritional information and breastfeeding support to income-eligible women, families, and children up to age five...

Participant-Centered Education places the participant at the center of the education process. This approach focuses on the participant’s capabilities and strengths, and requires educators “to work collaboratively with participants, to elicit and support their motivation to change, and to respect participants as the ones who ultimately decide if and when they will make a change.”
The criteria for consideration for the “Excellence in Participant Centered Education” award included:
 Demonstrates successful application and sustainability of participant centered education, e.g.: individual education using motivational interviewing methods, group education using techniques from Finding the Teacher Within, Facilitated Group Discussion, APL/other; AND
 Reinforces on-going participant centered education techniques for local agency staff; OR
 Applies nutrition education activities beyond core WIC services.
WIC is a national nutrition education program that promotes healthy eating, encourages and supports breast feeding, and provides referrals to health and community resources. Participants receive checks to buy healthy foods, tips for healthy eating and active living, support and help with breast feeding and referrals to other community programs.
The Resource Connection’s WIC program routinely serves a caseload of 1,350 unduplicated participants every month; and in 2012 was at or above that number each month. With 13 mobile WIC clinics throughout both counties, and a main office in Sutter Creek, Amador and Calaveras WIC strives to be accessible and convenient for families to receive services in a rural community.
For more information or to see if you may be eligible for benefits, please contact The Resource Connection WIC at (209)223-7685 or (800)218-2427
