A Sea of Scarlet By Lea-Marie C. Paar

Columbia College, Ca... On Friday, May 3rd, 2013, Columbia College held their 44th commencement ceremony in honor of their graduates. A graduating class of over one hundred students, older and younger alike, received their Associate of Science degrees, Associate of Arts degrees, or their certificates...

As the Oak Pavillion, where the ceremony was being held, filled with the graduates' friends and family, the Columbia College Big Band played a host of happy tunes, conducted by Dr. Rod Harris. Finally, it was time for the graduates to be welcomed in by the band, and, accompanied by faculty, the men and women who worked so hard to get this far walked in, beaming and waving to their loved ones.

After the national anthem was performed by Columbia College student Caroline Walsh, the acting president, Dr. Leslie Buckalew, welcomed the crowd and the students. As everyone continued to be welcomed with speeches by Brandon Moore (president of the Associated Students of Columbia College), Doralynn Foletti (president of the college's Classified Senate), John Leamy ( president of the Academic Senate) and graduating student Taylor Skokan, the crowd of scarlet-swathed students whispered and murmured excitedly amongst each other.

Finally, the big moment arrived; two faculty members, Erik Andal and Susan Medeiros, called each student up to receive their degree or certificate. The students excitedly lined up and, amidst cheering, laughing, and yelling, walked forward to receive their long-awaited prize as either Mr. Andal or Ms. Medeiros introduced the student and explained what that student was graduating with and who was most important to that student's success as they worked for their education.

After the very last student was greeted with cheers and applause, graduating student Rebekah Fegan took the stage to say farewell to the college on behalf of her classmates, and Dr. Buckalew presented the 2013 graduating class of Columbia College.
